Second GBG 24 Tick in town. A quirky mircopub with an aeronautical feel - repurposed airliner seats, propeller fan. A "TV" fashioned from a cardboard box, with an image of Trevor McDonald sellotaped to it.

A surprisingly limited selection of beers - just four cask on stillage - of which I am not a fan. No keg. The only cans I noticed were sours.

I guess this is how the owners like it.

Upper class micro for the moneyed locals - Imagine a West Country version of Motherland and you're not far off. To be fair it is pretty good (much better than the joy hole in Nailsea I did prior). Parquet flooring, cammo green walls and some bench seating plus a couple of old aircraft seats. Four cask on from cheap local producers (Cotleigh, Nuttycombe, Glastonbury and Twisted Oak). Oddly no barrel cider, just bottles. My Nuttycombe White Mild was in good form if a bit green (NBSS 3) with friendly service from the Eastern European barkeep. Plastic glasses if you drink outside. Nice enough, though the beer sourcing on my visit makes me wonder if they ever get any real quality in from outside the usual local cheap n’ cheerful suspects. That said, I’d use it if I were local. GBG24 listed, of course.

A new opening on Clevedon’s popular Hill Road, this is housed in the premises of a former roofing and building company and is North Somerset’s first micro-pub. Owned by the Twisted Oak brewery in nearby Wrington, it follows the usual micro-pub trend of a stripped back interior, no music, etc. The barman was very friendly and helpful, happily offering samples to try and even providing packs of cleaning wipes for people whose spectacles had misted up. Never seen that in a pub before!

It consists of one single room internally and has a fairly basic, but certainly not unpleasant, feel. The plain walls are mostly painted in a deep shade of maroon with contrasting cream at the front. The bench seating running along the sides of the pub looks to be very much home made from a few planks of wood, although it was covered in velvet padding. Tables were a mismatch of styles, and some small beer barrels had also had velvet padding attached to make them in to small stools. Even the bar counter appeared to be made from old pallets. In contrast, the flooring was an attractive parquet wood design. A couple of pieces of artwork for sale were on the walls and there was a small book shelf in one corner. Lighting was provided by those exposed filament bulbs which are of course de rigueur in any pub renovation these days.

Beers were all racked up on stillage behind the counter and the available selection was displayed on a chalk board above this, along with the style and ABV. Their own beers featured prominently as might be expected with Fallen Tree, Spun Gold, Old Barn, Slippery Slope and Crack Gold. These were joined by Bristol Blonde and Tremendous Delicious from Bristol brewer Dawkins as well as Pitchfork’s Old Slug and Cheddar Ales’ Goat’s Leap. Ciders meanwhile were a dry, medium or sweet from Wilcox. All in all, a very welcome addition to Hill Road.
