Visited last Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and a couple of beers. Have visited a couple of times before and I end up thinking I have taken a wrong turn near the market and suddenly it's there in front of me. Naturally part of the attraction for me is that they brew their own beers, available at the bar, in addition to a number of guest cask ales and some craft keg options too.

A decent mix of styles available, I had their own Comet beer plus Underdog (a porter by Northern Monkey Brew Co) and Nexus (a white beer by Eyes Brewing). My drinking accomplice had a Brewsmith Bitter which he was impressed with. There were easily another couple of beers I would have been tempted to try, had we not decided to move on after eating.

Food wise the choice is mainly burgers around the £6 to £7 mark, plus the option of sides (chips / sweet potato fries / onion rings) around the £3 mark. Very pleasant and definitely one of my go-to places when in Stockport town centre.

Located just off the market square, this is a large brewpub with a modern feel to it, which marks a sharp contrast in a town full of classic traditional boozers. The pub essentially has a two room layout with the servery at the rear straddling both of them. The place is bare boarded throughout and has a mix of undressed and fancy wallpapered walls. One bare brick wall in the right hand room had been covered with countless small picture frames displaying a seemingly unrelated selection of images, whilst elsewhere, shelves were stacked full of whisky bottles. The servery has a rough hewn counter and bare brick bar back with just a small section of traditional shelving. Seating options were a mix of pews and banquettes in the right hand room and standard tables and chairs to the left in a room that looked like it was a little more formal, although the brewing plant could be clearly seen to the rear. The place has a few quirky features including an impressive grandfather clock in one corner and light fittings made from bits of old pipe and the overall effect is very pleasant – a modest modernisation which fits in well with the town’s pub scene.
There was one homebrew on the bar – Remedy Oatmeal Stout – which I tried and found in excellent shape and a very tasty drop to boot. Other cask offerings included Squawk Pale Ale, Torrside Yellow Peak, Greenfield Black Five, Cheshire Brewhouse Engine Vein and something called ‘Go Bananas’ from an unknown brewery. This selection was ably supplemented by an eclectic keg selection and various bottled beers.
This was a really good start to my two days in Stockport, offering something markedly different to the vast majority of other pubs I visited. I found the place comfortable and well appointed and the beer was in great shape and probably merited further investigation. A good brewpub and well worth dipping into to see what’s on.

Modern brewbar with the usual hipsterish distressed industrial fittings and ambience. You can see that it’s two buildings knocked through when you arrive at the bar area and see half of the old supporting wall. From here you can also observe the glass-fronted brewery room to the left. Six pumps with a wide range of styles available. Just one of theirs on - the Oatmeal Stout - which was superb. Also, as to be expected, an eclectic range of keg and bottles too. As much as I didn’t care too much for it as a pub, the beer demands a visit. 7.5
