One of the oldest pubs in Clevedon, it’s located on the outskirts of the town and was perhaps a separate village at one time, or at the very least it must have been in the original part of Clevedon before it expanded in to the town that it is today. It’s a good sized pub internally and there is also a beer garden at the rear. The pub currently has a “fantastic business opportunity” notice outside, so how secure it’s future is I’m not certain, although it is still trading currently.

The main bar area is located to the left of the pub and this has some original features such as a few black beams on the ceiling and small sections of exposed stone walling, but on the whole has lost much of it’s originality with various modifications over the years. Flooring is a mixture of old wooden boards and equally old carpet, with a few pale blue tiles around the bar area. Dark wooden panelling is on the lower part of the walls with rough white plasterwork above and there were a couple of small fireplaces, although it’s a shame that these weren’t in use on a cold winter’s evening. There was little else of any note other than a few old pictures on the walls and a plasma screen showing Coronation Street. A room off to the right was perhaps more geared up for dining with tables and chairs quite tightly packed in, and this was perhaps slightly more contemporary with a lighter wood floor and mixture of deep red and white paintwork. A smaller snug at the front looked a little cosier with a couple of black leather sofas and a large world map on the wall. I could see a darts match in progress in a further room off to the right, but did not investigate this.

The menu looked to be a mass produced affair and offered the usual range of pub staples such as chilli con carne, sausage and mash, lasagne, cod & chips, Old Inn pie, etc., and these were mostly priced around the £8/£9 mark. There was also a selection of burgers as well as some sort of meal deals on most night such as curry, fish, pie, etc. There was also a carvery counter at the front of the pub, although whether this is still used I’m not sure.

Beers on tap were Doom Bar, Courage Best, Robinson’s Trooper and Cheddar Ale’s Potholer. Ciders were well represented with four from Thatcher’s – Gold, Haze, Dry and Stan’s Traditional as well as a couple more Thatcher’s boxes set up at the end of the bar. All in all, a solid enough local’s pub although not really worth making a special effort to get to.

Popped in on the basis of its GBG entry. Four ales available, plus a couple of ciders; my pint of Otter was spot-on. The interior is quite large and is separated into distinct drinking areas. The business-end of the pub needs a little upgrading as it’s stuck in 1976 whilst the outside needs a good coat of paint as it looks quite dirty and off-putting to the passing punter (it also doesn’t seem to catch the sun either, which doesn’t help) – see pic. Staff were friendly and there looked to be a nice outside garden. Food was also on offer.

A solid pub for a good beer if you’re in the vicinity but needs some work to make it as good as it should be.
