I liked this friendly pub. The split level interior is fantastic to wander round as the collection of musical instruments rest all over and there is so much to see around the walls. There were 3 ales on at our visit, Brains Rev James, Sharps Atlantic and Roosters This is England which we chose and enjoyed.

Quite a striking building for a live-music pub, with unexpectedly fancy glazing in both the front and side facades and other external decorative features. Once inside you find a slightly split-level layout, with three steps up from the side 'stage' to the bar / front seating area. Interesting, if slightly odd, mixture of traditional and modern furniture and decor. Welcoming landlord. Four real ales on handpump: Black Sheep, Sharp's Atlantic, Moorhouse's Pride of Pendle and an unattributed (but apparently Robinson's) Overhang (£3.30, and with a most unusual clip).

A nice pub is this, our first of the day straight off the train. An unusual shape inside, a staggered L if you like, turning the angle in increments, split level also. The leaded arched windows are a splendid feature as is the large possibly onyx chandelier. There is a leaded stained glass ceiling window of a wagon wheel shape which must be just a feature as there are rooms above. Decor includes a fair few musical items such as guitars, timpani drums, a keyboard etc, the lighting rigs being evidence that this is also a live music venue. Additionally there is a football theme with framed cigarette cards, b&w photos of players of yesteryear and Villa and also Ipswich Town pennants on display. The live early kick-off game was showing on TV to a fairly sizeable crowd.
Four on handpump, Sharp's Atlantic, Broadside, Moorhouse Blonde Witch and Black Sheep Holy Grail, a Monty Python themed beer. A pleasant spot indeed.
