Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Gate Inn

Quite a striking building for a live-music pub, with unexpectedly fancy glazing in both the front and side facades and other external decorative features. Once inside you find a slightly split-level layout, with three steps up from the side 'stage' to the bar / front seating area. Interesting, if slightly odd, mixture of traditional and modern furniture and décor. Landlord (very well priced at £2.95) and Old Speckled Hen available from the four handpumps on this latest visit.

A good traditional pub hosting a prominent position as you walk into town from the train station. The most striking feature being the large leaded corner windows. The customers in here were mainly mature blokes enjoying a Friday afternoons drinking both inside and out, as there were a few picnic benches out in the front. Three handpumps with two in use, serving Landlord and Old Speckled Hen.

When I first visited many years ago it was called "The Case Is Altered" which always struck me as a good name. It was a good pub then and still is now. We enjoyed an excellent pint of Landlord. Well worth a visit.

I liked this friendly pub. The split level interior is fantastic to wander round as the collection of musical instruments rest all over and there is so much to see around the walls. There were 3 ales on at our visit, Brains Rev James, Sharps Atlantic and Roosters This is England which we chose and enjoyed.

A nice pub is this, our first of the day straight off the train. An unusual shape inside, a staggered L if you like, turning the angle in increments, split level also. The leaded arched windows are a splendid feature as is the large possibly onyx chandelier. There is a leaded stained glass ceiling window of a wagon wheel shape which must be just a feature as there are rooms above. Decor includes a fair few musical items such as guitars, timpani drums, a keyboard etc, the lighting rigs being evidence that this is also a live music venue. Additionally there is a football theme with framed cigarette cards, b&w photos of players of yesteryear and Villa and also Ipswich Town pennants on display. The live early kick-off game was showing on TV to a fairly sizeable crowd.
Four on handpump, Sharp's Atlantic, Broadside, Moorhouse Blonde Witch and Black Sheep Holy Grail, a Monty Python themed beer. A pleasant spot indeed.

Split level open plan pub just off the end of the high street, with bar up the step at the far side as you walk in.

Some nice features here, like the lead windows and stained glass on the ceiling, but the open plan design and the relatively small size of the place doesn't seem to quite work somehow, not helped by the carpet rising in places. There is also not much seating, sugesting standing groups in the evening? Apart from that its tidy enough & offers 3 real ales - Doom Bar, Pride & Butty Bach, quality was ok.

The exterior of the pub is quite impressive, a row of large, ornate windows, ablaze with light on a cold winter's evening.

The interior is open plan and on split level. There is a dart board on the lower level. There are two TV screens on opposite sides of the pub, both showing the football match on ITV on my visit. A band was setting up, ready to play at 9:30.

The interior decor was quite bland, but the split level layout made it interesting nevertheless. The clientele were mixed in age from 'emo' teenagers to elderly gents. The atmosphere was really quite friendly.

They had three real ales on when I visited, Butty Bach, Timothy Taylor's Landlord and London Pride. There was also the usual stuff. The Butty Bach and Landlord were really nice. I didn't try the London Pride.

All in all, I was really pleased with the Gate. It is a pub that I have hitherto ignored. I shall not ignore it again. It is a very nice pub!

Soup Dragon left this review about The Gate Inn

A very nice looking little early 20th century corner pub and music venue, in undressed brick and black, with leaded windows.

The interior is one room on a couple of levels and in white and wood panel with cream ceiling. On the lower level there is the more 'bar' kind of area, with a dart board, the upper level has the tables and chairs, with a TV that had Sky Sports News on. The only downside was the windows, from the inside, they look a little worse for wear and the odd dead wasp added to the interest as there aren't any pictures or ephemera on the walls or dotted about. There was no music playing, the service was friendly and there was a mixed mature clientele.

Beer; tap stuff with Timothy Taylor Landlord, London Pride and a decent Black Sheep bitter on handpull.

I have been here a couple of times now. I really like this place both on the evenings and daytimes i have visited - cant say about friday or saturday nights, but i think this is the best overall place in the town centre and a worthy accompanyment to the Duke.

A proper corner pub near busy crossroads. Used to called "The Case is Altered" before changed back to its original name. It is student pub as Sutton Coldfield College is only few mins walk. Best avoid on Weekends when students are in full swing. Most famous resident is ghost that haunts Gent toilet. I didn't see any ghost when I visited toilet. Rather basic and very tiny pub. I wont be in rush to get back.

Clive Thompson left this review about The Gate Inn

Looks an attractive pub from the outside with it's elevated position and leaded windows. Inside it has a bit of a reverse tardis effect. Most of the space is taken up by the bar and a stage area and there's very little seating. It's main attraction is the regular live music sessions but with poor acoustics and as everyone is so close to the band it can reach ear bleeding levels. The music was good though and we had an enjoyable evening. Just London Pride on draught I think.
