Although located only a short stroll from the harbour, it is nonetheless in something of a residential side street and up quite a steep flight of steps from the quayside, so it’s not somewhere you’re likely to stumble across by accident, but is certainly worth checking out.

There a small amount of covered outside seating in the roadway opposite the pub, whilst internally it’s all one single open plan room with a fairly traditional feel to it. There’s plenty of black beams on the ceiling as well as some very chunky upright supporting posts, slate tiling on the floor and some areas of exposed stonework, although much of the walls were painted in a rather vibrant turquoise colour. A couple of strings of fairy lights were hung around the edge and there were numerous old black and white photographs on the walls, many of local people and others of a nautical theme. Seating was mixture of regular tables and chairs along with some church style pews around the perimeter. Service at the bar was a bit manic, it narrows quite considerably at the back where the bar counter is, and this was something of a pinch point.

Beers on tap were Tribute and Dartmoor Legend, whilst the ciders were Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze, Hunts Bull Walloper and Sandford Orchard’s Slack Ma Girdle. Overall, it had a nice buzzy ambience, and is well worth taking the hike up the steps to get here.

Very much a locals pub but still well recommended for us visitors. Good beer and nice atmosphere. Better than Wetherspoonns.
