Located just off the main shopping street and a short stroll from the harbour, this struck me as very much a local’s pub when we visited, rather than the more popular touristy spots in the more scenic locations around the waterfront.

Inside it’s all one large, open plan room and is in some ways a little basic in appearance, although it still has many of the ingredients of a traditional pub such as a parquet wood floor and black timberwork inlaid in to the walls. The plain white ceiling looked a little shabby though, there were at least two TV screens on the wall, one showing a football match, as well as a very modern looking quiz machine and the whole atmosphere felt a little blokey. Seating was mostly regular tables and chairs, with plenty of high stools at the bar. Wood cladding was on the lower part of the rear wall, and an ornately carved black wooden fireplace was off to the left, although this appeared to be disused. Various horse brasses were dotted around as well as numerous old black and white photographs of the locale. Other bits and pieces were mostly nautical in nature, and included a model of an old sailing ship and a porcelain lighthouse. A chalkboard above the bar somewhat discouraged responsible drinking, advising that it was cheaper to double up on spirits or have a whole bottle of wine. Both Jager Bombs and Agwa Bombs were also offered.

The solitary beer on tap was Doom Bar, whilst ciders were better represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze, Carling Dark Fruit and Stan’s Traditional.

This is a one room back alley locals pub that has a narrow gable end frontage with Georgian style ashlar blocks and huge sash windows on the first floor. The interior ironically has a not so long bar counter (compared to some I have seen) with an unusual burgundy fabric covered front in the middle of the right wall, a brick fire place in the left wall with a cast iron coal stove, a pool table at the rear of the room and a dart board on the right wall also at the back. Around the perimeter of the room are fixed burgundy fabric bench seats and at the front of the room are three large round tables made from massive wooden barrels which have been cut down to form a large base, the entire floor is rather smart parquet. I spotted a couple of small flat screen TV’s more suited to individual viewing rather than for mass sporting events. The bus terminus and a public car park are right next to the pub but it does not appear to have any parking of its own.

Ales on during this visit were Green King IPA and Bays Topsail. I had a pint of the Topsail which was in good condition in my opinion.

A local drinker’s pub with around half a dozen people in during my early evening visit. First impressions were that the exterior looked a bit grubby and not very inviting but I felt quite comfortable here once I sat down with a decent pint. The décor is fairly traditional and I can’t imagine it does much (if any) food which suits me, the place reminded me a little of an old working men’s club. I would pop in for one if in the area again.
