An attractive looking brick-built pub in a prime spot overlooking the water, it seems to be a bit of a higgledy-piggledy mismatch of different areas, many of them outside as well as two quite separate buildings. Part of the outside area includes a bridge over the lock which contains numerous picnic benches, as well as what appears to be a small floating island. Is this the only pub beer garden on a bridge?

Internally it’s quite traditional with much exposed stonework on the upper part of the walls with dark wood panelling down below, further dark stained wood panelling on the ceiling and wooden boards on the floor. All manner of bits and pieces were affixed to the walls and ceiling, including a selection of flags, brasses, wine box ends, old brewery advertisements and mirrors, a few old black and white pictures of the locale, and a framed football shirt. A pile of board games were stacked in one corner next to a gas stove. Boards next to the bar advertised an extensive wine and whisky selection, with the latter containing a hundred or more options by the looks of things.

Beers on tap were the very local Moonwake C.A.S.K., Timothy Taylor Landlord and Fyne Ales Jarl, whilst the ciders were both from Thistly Cross with their Whisky Cask and Traditional, the latter of which went down a treat. The landlord was a jovial chap, and all in all I thought this was well worth a visit compared to many of the very food focused options on the other side of the quay.

Multi roomed old building beside / behind the Custom House, although there are some modern extensions. Four pulls and about 20 keg taps, providing Scots beers plus Landlord on cask. I can’t disagree with anything Quinno says other than I found it easily enough (and there’s a typo in Teuchters). My beer was reasonable, I went with NBSS 3. A mix of punters on a late Thursday afternoon, not a lot of seats available what with diners, young women, babies, solo tickers, etc across the age groups filling the place. Eclectic decor in the conservatory, I liked the murals, the pump clips and whisky boxes, less keen on the Guinness six nations tat.

Slightly tricky to find, this is an old dockside building (apparently the former waiting room for the Leith-Aberdeen ferry, ‘Tueuchtar’ being slang for a Highlander) brought back into use as a gastro. Quite characterful and multi-roomed; the main bar is pleasing to the eye with a high ceiling clad in tongue and groove wood panelling, third length wall panelling of the same and undressed stone walls covered in rugby paraphernalia. Conservatory area to the rear. Pub is GBG listed but I raised an eyebrow when I saw 5 cask offerings on a Tuesday afternoon and sure enough my Crossborders XPA was from a long-undisturbed pump (NBSS 2) at an upmarket £2.50 a half. Another one that probably is better visited on a busy evening but really, don't put cask on you can't sell during the early part of the week!
