Wonderful wonky Tudor building which has managed to survive in a less salubrious part of town, contrasting with the nasty tower block over the road. Small bar on entry with a 1970s feel - tiled floor and black beams. Servery is here with GBG-worthy pumps, four of them all on and with a good selection. My Ramsgate Carnivale was excellent (NBSS 4) and the Bexley Cherry Brandy also impressed given the heat and lower turnover (3). I was big fan of the wooden Union flag-bedecked, tray-carrying pig. Behind the bar is a classic characterful old skool lounge with all the beams on show as well as further porcine décor. From here you can access a surprisingly decent rear patio with an ecclesiastical bent. A trip to the traps via some very tight and rickety stairs revealed a large and rather brilliant upstairs area, give the Full Tudor works (I subsequently discovered that the pub is listed by CAMRA in the their Outstanding Conversions/Restorations catalogue). This place really grew on me and I’d definitely recommend you put this one towards the top of the visit list, leaving enough time to have a good look round. Truffled ahead as my Pub of the Day in Maidstone. 8.5

An excellent and ancient pub of character - the higgledy-piggledy woodwork on the exterior is reflected by the whole of the interior. Small bar area with a snug behind and two nice larger rooms above but mind the awkward staircases if venturing up with drinks. Appears to be a CAMRA favourite and deservedly so, with three good ales on: Iron Pier Fruit Cake, Mad Cat Red Ale and Bexley Golden Acre.

15th century pub which looks great from the outside and has plenty of character on the inside too. There is a small ground floor bar with another room behind the bar. Two uneven and steep staircases take you up to two further rooms and the toilets. There is also an enclosed yard at the rear. Although that seemed a bit depressing.

A couple of locals were sat chatting in the tiny main bar area, whilst another customer was sat on his own in the quieter room to the rear. The Scottish barman was friendly and seemed to be the subject of a bit of banter.

The 3 ales on were McCann's Janet Street, Kent Old Skool & Gadd's She Sells Sea Shells. The cider was Biddenden's Bushels. Well worth a visit.
