Tucked away up a very steep lane just off Whiteladies Road, this isn’t likely to get much in the way of passing trade, but was nonetheless quite busy on our recent early Saturday evening visit.

Internally it consists of two rooms, an L-shape room around the bar counter and another room off to one side. It’s got quite a cosy ambience with low lighting levels coming from some ship’s lantern style lights hanging above the bar counter and candles in wine bottles on most of the tables and window sills. The flooring is some sort of wood strip, whilst there are a few wooden beams on the ceiling and some areas of exposed brickwork on the walls, with painted wood panelling down below. Padded bench seating is around much of the permitter, along with small tables and chairs. An inset shelf in one wall had a small collection of books, and there were also a few pictures dotted around. A couple of plates on the end of the bar had a pile of sausage rolls and such like, as well as a sponge cake in a glass dome.

There was a good choice of beer on tap with Butcombe Original, Hop Union’s Bonville Pale, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Dawkin’s Easton IPA and Otter Ale, whilst a further pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were a trio from Thatcher’s with their Gold, Haze and Dry, as well as a hot mulled variety although I assume this is seasonal. All in all, a pretty decent pub and a very pleasant contrast to many of the more frantic options on the main road.

The Port of Call is situated on a narrow road and up a short steep hill from the Kings Arms.
Once inside there is a single L shaped room with the bar facing, the room is carpeted and has comfy bench seating and chairs to the right, there was also a real fire on the go to the right, giving the pub a cosy feel, there was a TV on to the rear right which was showing football previews.
There was a good choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Dawkins Tremdious Delicious, which was a very nice drink, the other real ales noted were Butcombe Bitter,Taylor Landlord,Longman american pale ale and Milk Street The usual.
There was decent background music playing.
I thought this was a very pleasant pub to have a drink in,just a shame it was empty on my Saturday dinner visit.
