This is a long rectangular room split into three levels. The interior has been modernised to a high standard. I found it impossible to tell if the place was an original pub or a conversion. I could see no signs of TVs or pool tables which is a plus. There was a music track playing but at such a low volume that I could barely hear it. Perversely people seemed to be mainly drinking at the front but those eating were at the rear where the bar is.
There were six hand pumps which had something called Three Kings True North Brown, Anarchy Blonde Star doubled, Darwin's Evolution, Black Storm Gold and Hop Studio Music. I went for the first one (£3.70) which turned out to be a superb pale hop bomb. I liked this place and found it sedate and relaxing. Their Bacchus venue nearby has a much better beer choice but I preferred my stay here. It's GBG 2018 listed.

Much improved these days decor wise as it's had a full refurbishment. Now up to 6 guest ales on the bar from far and wide. All the beers are always well kept and it's now a regular haunt of ours when in Newcastle.

A narrow entrance widens out into a large one roomed pub on two levels. It's quite ornate, but parts of it, especially the carpet and some of the tables are getting a bit shabby. Gets very busy when there's a show on at the nearby theatre both before and after the show. Comfortable for a sit down when I'm with the other half and she says the wine's OK. Has a couple of real ales on the bar usually including a Mordue but nothing too inventive. The beers all kept pretty well, it's a decent pub.

I'm a big fan of the SJF pub chain and this example didn't disappoint. Externally it doesn’t look like much, but internally it’s done-out to a high standard, with arched knock-throughs, joining what I assume to be three original rooms, with the main bar down a few steps at the far end. There's plenty of wood trim, intricate ceiling declaration, etched mirrors and plush semi-circular booth seating in the main bar area – all very classy. Some might call it an up-market Wetherspoons. As to be expected, there's an impressive selection of ales over the six pumps; I noted Tiny Rebel and Brinkburn but there were a fair number of others. My Brinkburn Groovy Juice was a good beer in great shape and flew down, belying it's 6% strength. The barman was friendly and enthusiastic. Fairly busy for a Monday lunchtime with a mature, well-heeled crowd. This one should be an automatic inclusion on a crawl of this great pub city. 8.5
