a grand city centre conversion pub done very well. I won’t describe the interior as others have but I think it succeeds in capturing the atmosphere of an ornate Victorian pub. the bar had six real ales which were a decent selection, two were from Marble today. Prices range from the low £3s to £5 for a pint. Service was good and the place was pleasantly ticking over. The simple lunch time menus placed on the tables looked like surprisingly good value, eg. £7 for burger and chips. well worth calling in for a relaxing pint.

This is a long rectangular room split into three levels. The interior has been modernised to a high standard. I found it impossible to tell if the place was an original pub or a conversion. I could see no signs of TVs or pool tables which is a plus. There was a music track playing but at such a low volume that I could barely hear it. Perversely people seemed to be mainly drinking at the front but those eating were at the rear where the bar is.
There were six hand pumps which had something called Three Kings True North Brown, Anarchy Blonde Star doubled, Darwin's Evolution, Black Storm Gold and Hop Studio Music. I went for the first one (£3.70) which turned out to be a superb pale hop bomb. I liked this place and found it sedate and relaxing. Their Bacchus venue nearby has a much better beer choice but I preferred my stay here. It's GBG 2018 listed.

Much improved these days decor wise as it's had a full refurbishment. Now up to 6 guest ales on the bar from far and wide. All the beers are always well kept and it's now a regular haunt of ours when in Newcastle.

A narrow entrance widens out into a large one roomed pub on two levels. It's quite ornate, but parts of it, especially the carpet and some of the tables are getting a bit shabby. Gets very busy when there's a show on at the nearby theatre both before and after the show. Comfortable for a sit down when I'm with the other half and she says the wine's OK. Has a couple of real ales on the bar usually including a Mordue but nothing too inventive. The beers all kept pretty well, it's a decent pub.

I'm a big fan of the SJF pub chain and this example didn't disappoint. Externally it doesn’t look like much, but internally it’s done-out to a high standard, with arched knock-throughs, joining what I assume to be three original rooms, with the main bar down a few steps at the far end. There's plenty of wood trim, intricate ceiling declaration, etched mirrors and plush semi-circular booth seating in the main bar area – all very classy. Some might call it an up-market Wetherspoons. As to be expected, there's an impressive selection of ales over the six pumps; I noted Tiny Rebel and Brinkburn but there were a fair number of others. My Brinkburn Groovy Juice was a good beer in great shape and flew down, belying it's 6% strength. The barman was friendly and enthusiastic. Fairly busy for a Monday lunchtime with a mature, well-heeled crowd. This one should be an automatic inclusion on a crawl of this great pub city. 8.5

This is a good sized, slightly upmarket city centre pub from the ever-reliable Sir John Fitzgerald pub chain. You enter to a comparatively narrow front section lined with banquettes on either side which have been supplemented with some particularly comfy looking chairs. The walls here are wood panelled and decorated with a series of etched mirrors. Eventually the room opens out to the rear, with the servery appearing on the right hand side. Similar furnishings can be found on the raised left hand side of the room, whilst a short flight of steps takes you down to the long, dark wood bar counter with its similarly styled bar back. The walls in this part of the pub have some sort of repeating photo montage covering them, as well as some stylish black and white photographs and blackboards listing the various cask and keg options. Some mirrored pillars and filigree ironwork partitioning add to the pub's classy look. A great retro soundtrack aimed squarely at the pub's obvious middle age target market, played throughout my Sunday evening visit but I was one of only five customers at this time of day and it unfortunately felt that I was intruding somewhat as the staff busied themselves with cleaning and tidying duties.
The pub recently won the local CAMRA Area Pub of the Year award, so I was looking forward to a good choice of ales. Options on this visit were Anarchy Blonde Star, Magic Rock Ringmaster, Left Handed Giant Red Five, Almasty Pale, Howling Hops Pale XX and Two by Two Sitting Duck Stout. A giggly barmaid served me a fine pint of the latter and I noted a strong, eclectic keg range including beers from The Kernel, Burning Sky and Hawkshead among others.
This is a pretty classy bar that seems to have gone quite upmarket in terms of the way it presents itself, in contrast to the chain's namesake pub in Sunderland which I felt had a wider appeal. I found it difficult to gauge what this pub might be like when it was busier, but left feeling that it was the sort of place you might enjoy with your partner of fussy friends, rather than heading to for a session.

Part of the Fitzeralds group, so hence the name. You receive a genuine friendly welcome from the staff and manager. This is a well run large traditional pub and is clean and tidy. There are a few areas looking a bit tired at present, but hear they are about to do a refurb before the end of the year, so will be defo scoring a ten rating later. Four ales on handpump two regs Jarrow Rivet Catcher, Black Sheep. Two guest beers; Tyne Bank Dakota Rise and a beer from the Orkney Islands, Island Hopping. The Tyne Bank was a good session beer.
