The GBG throws up some surprises. Just how did a Chainy Greene King get in the Bible?

It had two extra beers over the usual Greene King range - and I went for a decent Sambrooks Junction but didn't appreciate paying £4.95 for the privilege.

Music far too loud, chainy feel and much better options in the area.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Royal George

Although I used to work nearby a few years ago, I hardly ever used to visit as there were always groups of rather unsavoury-looking characters hanging about. However, the place looks rather more appealing now with a smarter appearance both inside and out (and the hanging baskets certainly help). Staple-shaped bar. Now branded as a Taylor Walker house with a reasonable selection of real ales from six handpumps: 1730, London Glory and Purple Reign from Greene King, Sambrook's Lavender Hill, Southwark LPA and Portobello Market Porter.

Situated to one side of Euston station, this is a large Taylor Walker pub with a predictably transient customer base. The pub has a wide U-shaped interior, with corner entrances at either end of the frontage, plus another door in the middle of the front wall, suggesting a former two or three bar layout. The right hand side of the pub is fairly simple in its layout, with high tables and stools in a space dominated by a large pull-down screen showing live cricket. A few black and white photos of the old Euston Arch and other local scenes dotted the walls, but the area was pretty dark and gloomy compared with the rest of the pub. The room narrows as the servery appears along the mid-section of the rear wall. Here, a few standard tables and chairs run under the front windows, opposite the bar with its tongue and groove panelled counter and plain bar back. A few slot machines could be found here along with a couple more TV screens also showing cricket and Sky Sports News. The left hand side is the largest section of the pub and has a mix of standard chairs and cracked leather banquettes which run down the left and along the rear wall. A nicer button backed banquette can be found in a recess behind the servery, underneath some odd wood panel effect wallpaper. Elsewhere there is a green and cream paint scheme, postage stamp wallpaper, some dark paint around a rear corner fireplace and anglypta ceiling. To one side of the fireplace there are some highly unusual art deco(?) painted wood panels with images relating to drinking on them – by far the pub’s most interesting feature. More screens showing the same sports channels could be found round this side and there were flags from the Euro 2016 nations covering the ceiling. Music played quietly and a few drinkers moved out to the limited selection of pavement seats to the front of the pub.
This place has recently found its way into the Good Beer Guide but still remains very much the poor relation when compared to other Guide listed pubs in the immediate area. That’s not to say that there wasn’t a reasonable selection here, with the row of hand pumps dispensing Sambrooks Junction and Pumphouse Pale, Taylor Walker 1730, Greene King London Glory and Purple Reign and Southwark LPA. A pint of the latter set me back a deeply upsetting £4.85, which I could have much better spent on a better kept and more interesting pint in the Euston Tap, but as it was, I had to make do with this passable and rather bland tasting pint instead.
This place has seemingly realised that it needs to broaden its ale range to steal away some custom from the likes of the Euston Tap, Doric Arch and Bree Louise, and its Guide listing should perhaps be seen as the realisation of such an attempt. In other parts of the city, this place would potentially stand out, but whilst I was happy enough here, I really can’t see foresee regular return visits.
