A beautiful heritage interior - worth every one of its three stars on Camra's inventory. There are two sets of two hand pumps, with Landlord and Abbot to the left and a couple of guests to the right. One was from Salopian and the other Black Sheep. I went for the Black Sheep Blonde, which was in very good condition (NBSS 4) and probably the best beer that I can recall drinking in the blonde category. I went and sat in the small room to the left of the bar, which has some amazing carved figures around the fireplace, and some rather faded paintings on the walls. The barman told me they were having to put prices up this week, but as this meant that my Black Sheep would have been £2 instead of £1.95, I said that I wasn't particularly bothered. (The Landlord and Abbot are going up by rather more, it seems.)

Peter Kavanagh's in a fine side street pub that is located some way out of the city centre. However, if you are making the effort to get out to the Philharmonic and to admire that pub's period features, it would be well worth your while making the extra 10-minute walk to this pub too.

Whilst it doesn't have the popularity and panache of the Philharmonic, some of the features here are still worthy of merit. A room at the front of the pub and another to the rear both have excellent murals. The dim lighting helps create a very different atmosphere to the Philharmonic, but the murals are impressive.

A further large room adjacent to the bar contains all kind of knick knacks to peruse. Similarly the corridor connecting the bar itself with all of the other rooms also contains items of interest.

The landlady has been here for 30-odd years, whist the friendly barman we encountered had also been working here for over 20 years and was knowledgeable about the history of the pub.

The number of handpulls has now been reduced to 3. On our visit, these were clipped with Salopian Hop Twister & Shropshire Gold & Greene King Abbot. This is probably a good thing, as I've never ever found this pub busy. My Hop Twister was in good condition and certainly better than beers I've had in the past here. I do wonder how the pub survives though.

Situated in the Georgian Quarter, this pub has a wonderful interior worthy of close inspection.Named after a longstanding landlord who died in 1950,it's quirky to boot. There is lots of wood panelling and has a central corridor with the bar, while the front snug to the right of the entrance has a curved banquette, wall murals depicting some humourous scenes and a collection of musical instruments hanging from the ceiling. The tables here all have inlaid ashtrays ,not usable these days but a design feature. There is a door to the bar but no counter. On the other side of the serving bar is a back lounge ,descrete but being used by the publican as a quiet seating for his elderly female relative, with some shopping recently delivered.
Opposite the bar there is a two level lounge with some impressive banquettes and chandeliers.Live music is a feature here, although with it's modest interior maybe this will be small scale. There are no flatscreens, muzak or machines so a very authentic feel.
There were 5 handpumps working on my trip serving GK Abbott,Lees Big Bad Wolf,Wadworth Dirty Rucker,Tall Ships Waterloo Sunset and Rock the Boat (NBSS 2.5,it failed to rock my boat). This wasn't a great line up with several undistinguished brewers wares on display which was a fly in the ointment.Worth a one pint stop to see the interior and very genuine boozer atmosphere.
