A large imposing roadside pub on the border between Wollaton and Radford. Recently refurbished by Greene King the Crown now has a food presence as is positioning itself more towards familys. In its former days this was more of a rough and ready boozer. There is a large central square bar with four hand pull but only ever two available according to the bar man and both were unfortunately from Greene king. The options were London glory or old Speckled hen. I opted for the latter at a very expensive £3.50 in what is not the most desirable area/ pub. The refurb has seen a big revamp of fixtures and fittings with new carpets and new tables and chairs but the layout remains the same aside from a new pool area to the back tight hand side that also has a darts board. There is also more of a dining area to the left corner. On my Thursday afternoon visit there was very few people in which can make for a slightly bland atmosphere because the pub is so large and has very high ceilings. Overall a pretty average pub with pricy beer but the speckled hen was in pretty good nick ( as much as speckled hen can be). I think this place will become busier once it builds its food presence as it is in a prime location next to the main gateway to notional from the west. I would call again in passing if around but nothing to make a special journey for, just another generic Greene king pub with slighty better than average architecture. Greene king must see something in it though to invest in it the way they have.
