Refurbished and (slightly) renamed since my previous visit, this has turned from what was a basic, no frills, local’s boozer in to something all together much better, and was pretty much full to capacity on our recent Sunday afternoon visit, with a buzzy atmosphere and generally very pleasant ambience.

It consists of several interconnected rooms around a central bar counter, with some sort of wood strip on the floor, some exposed brickwork and pale blue paint elsewhere. Dark wood panelling was on the lower part of the walls and there was a small fireplace off to one side. Seating was mostly bench tables and benches, although there were also one or two old leather sofas that looked like they’d be pretty much impossible to get back out of once you’d sat down. A number of beer mats were tacked around the walls, and a piano was off to one side with a pile of board games stacked on top. There were also a few pieces of artwork for sale and a rolled up projector screen, so presumably sporting fixtures are screened on occasions.

Despite the aforementioned beer mats, there did not appear to be any real ales on tap with just Goram IPA on keg. Perhaps I missed them. Ciders fared better through with Thatcher’s Gold and Iford Wild juice. Overall, despite the lack of beer, I really liked it in here and would certainly make a point of stopping in again when next in the area.

The Dark Horse is a town pub that is situated towards the top end of Church Road.
Once inside the bar faces in a roughly L shaped room, the floor is bare boarded, there is bench seating to the rear left and normal tables and chairs and long tables with long benches on the right side, the rear right side is up one step.
There is a separate room to the rear right which was in darkness.
There were no pumps on the bar,so i opted for a half of Butcombe Gorum which was a keg beer, this was quite a nice drink,i then noticed a barrel on the bar, which had Bespoke Golden Rule on.
The pub seemed a bit too cluttered for my liking with too much seating crammed into it.
The pub was empty on my Saturday dinner visit, but i got the impression that it would be a pub to have a meal.

A basic, no frills boozer located towards the top of Church Road. It a single room, U-shape pub with the bar in the middle. To the left of the bar is some old bench seating and a scattering of tables and chairs elsewhere.

There were several fruit machines, quiz machines, etc. dotted around, and a plasma in one corner near the door although the volume was turned down on this. There was a further area at the back of the pub, although this was in darkness so I didn’t explore it.

It was very quiet on a recent Saturday evening, with only about half a dozen other punters in there at 9:00pm. The solitary barmaid was busy texting but stopped promptly enough to serve us. A little background music would probably have added to the atmosphere, it was mostly either too quiet or too noisy (when something had been put on the jukebox).

The only beer on offer was keg Courage Best unfortunately. Ciders were Blackthorn and Symond’s Founders Reserve.
