A rather grotty large pub which feels like a down-market version of Wetherspoons, but without the charm or class. An abundance of mobility scooters at the front was a clue. Certainly the staff were charmless, and many of the customers had an air about them- well, to be more accurate, polluted the air around them. The layout is described b others, below, while Blackthorn’s observation about it being depressing matches my own thoughts. Darts, gaming machines and TV showing live sports provided the best entertainment; there was certainly no conversation to be had here. Only one ale on, Butcombe Original, which was in poor condition though it was priced around 30% cheaper than other nearby pubs. The range of megas included John Smiths, Stella and Guinness. We wiped our feet on leaving, hopefully never to return.

A long established pub on the up and coming Church Road strip, my recollection from my last visit several years ago is of quite a cosy old pub split in to several different rooms. Now though it’s all been opened out in to one room forming a slightly incomplete ‘O’ shape around the bar counter and is certainly not at all cosy, with a sports fixture list outside and a rather unpleasant smell from the loo’s assailing us as soon as we entered.

Décor wise it’s all rather brown, with painted wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and various types of lino on the floor, including some of which was a wood strip effect. Elsewhere was some cream paintwork and there were a number of pieces of artwork around, including a colourful one of the Suspension Bridge and a number of Banksy prints. Overall though I found it quite depressing, not helped my some of the clientele who have perhaps decamped from the recently closed Wetherspoon’s just down the road. There were also a number of TV screens dotted around, as well as several fruit machines, a darts board and so on.

Beers on tap were Courage Best and Butcombe Original, whilst a further pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were a trio from Thatcher’s with their Gold, Haze and Dry. Overall, I was quite disappointed with this based on my previous visit, and will probably skip it next time I’m in the area.

The Fire Engine is a proper looking pub that is at the very top end of Church Road close to the road junction.
Once inside there is a large single room with the bar facing, there is a lino floor, there are normal tables and chairs to the front and three tall tables and chairs to the front left, there is a darts board to the front right.
Two TVs were showing the snooker, the rear area is up three steps.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Courage Bitter, which was a decent enough drink, the other real ale was Charles Wells Fire Engine Bitter.
The pub opened at 11am prompt and was empty on my visit.
