The former "Fat Cat", "Linenhall", "Mockingbird" and "El Sotano" has reopened yet again as "Big Hand Alehouse". This time, under Big Hand Brewery of Wrexham, with eight handpumps to pull their beer, it stands a much better chance of success. Enterin... [more>]

A back street cafe bar with entrances from both front and rear - it's hard to tell which is the scruffier. Any finishing touches the building may have had have been long since stripped away - bare brick was what they wanted, apparently, and bare bric... [more>]

Recently re-opened as Jones Bar. Called in today where they had 3 cask beers on,2 Moorhouses and Old trout from the Worsthorne brewery which was spot on. All 3 casks were a snip at £1.50 a pint.

The first stop on a three-day bender to try and tick off all of Rutland’s pubs. This was an inauspicious start, as it’s a large roadside bar/eatery. Spacious and fairly plain inside, the suntrap decking outside is a much better bet if the weather is ... [more>]

The first of a number of wonderful olde English villages in Rutland. On entering past an anthropomorphic porcine chef, the pub is made up from three semi knocked-through rooms off right from a reception area. It’s mainly tiled flooring, white woodchi... [more>]

A large multi-roomer place which has been modernized a bit and caters for the middle class dining set (the magazines available were somewhat more upmarket than what I’m used to). The overworked barman appeared to be doing every job in the pub which m... [more>]

A row of buildings knocked through a bit overlooking the village green and duck pond, quite a bucolic location for a sunny Friday’s imbibing. Inside it’s a single room with low beams, stone walls and that sort of thing; scrubbed-up a bit (the bar is ... [more>]

One of the local CAMRA branch’s favourites. This is an L shaped place, fairly modernised and maybe a little bland, refitted in light neutral tones. We did enjoy the cushions though! Three beers over four pumps; Oakham Once to Yourself (very good nick... [more>]

A large and friendly place which feels pretty aged all round and is located in a small village, sideways onto the road. Three rooms over a number of levels and there’s quite a bit of character too. The owner chatted to us about the chickens which we ... [more>]

Set back from the road a bit and easy to miss, the multi-level interior is a bit soulless but the pub has been recently taken over so I’m guessing it has had a bit of emergency work done that needs to bed in a bit. Despite not technically being open,... [more>]

Quite dramatically built along a slope which looks impressive as you pull up to it. Unfortunately it perhaps promises more than it delivers as an unsympathetic refurb has happened at some point not so long ago, all very beige and boring over some kno... [more>]

Nothing old about this place! It is a large new-build Marstons eatery situated just off the A606 Oakham bypass. L-shaped inside with some broken-up areas. Four ales on, Hobgoblin, Pedigree, Wainwright and Oakham JHB, the latter of which was faintly t... [more>]

Set a fair way back from the road, this is a fairly dowdy place, done-out in greys and white. Four pumps, sporting the “all ones you've heard of” school of choice, quite at variance with the local CAMRA write-up from earlier in the year on WhatPub; G... [more>]

What looks to have been a former hotel building (I could be wrong) had, after a walk through a small foyer, a bar up a step to the left with a large dining area dead ahead, and a separate 'breakout' dining area to the right, opposite the bar. A room ... [more>]
