Visit was late afternoon late April, so out of season and hence not crowded

My first visit I walked out following the Wetherspoon's style of people ordering umpteen types of coffee, multiple food etc

Because I was in hotel just up the road, with only keg stuff, I gave it another go a day later, and had a very nice pint of Hobgoblin

Being a Marston's pub you the food is as per their factory stuff, and the beers are same, but as I said my pint was good

I found staff polite, neat and helpful

Did not try the food

A good sized Marston’s pub in a prominent position on the seafront and with good views of the pier, this has had an extensive refurbishment since the last time I was in here and now has a quite different character. In many ways it reminds me of a Wetherspoon’s, and that is perhaps their intention to provide some effective competition for the recently opened Cabot Court a few doors up. First impressions were not good with service at the bar being particularly slow. There were two barmaids serving with about half a dozen punters waiting, many ordering food. Inexplicably, one of the barmaids then wandered off to refill the ‘fridge making the situation even worse.

Decor wise, it has a somewhat bland, corporate feel with laminate flooring in the central area and various carpeted areas around the perimeter. Walls were a mixture of cream paintwork and flock wallpaper with the pillars and other detailing painted in contrasting burgundy or khaki green. There was a plasma tucked down in one corner and a couple of fruit machines, but little else of any note. There is a small terrace at the front with offers pleasant views of the sea and has wooden decking, wicker furniture and plenty of small trees adorned with fairy lights.

The menu was extensive and was divided in to sections such as classics, burgers, grills and pies. Most of the mains looked to be around the £10 mark. There was also a specials board offering another twenty odd choices, and whilst these were priced similarly they are apparently available all day as a “2 for 1” deal, which rather suggests that they wouldn’t be that special, IMHO.

Beers on tap were Marston’s Joggers Tipple, Hobgoblin and Pedigree. The cider was Thatcher’s Gold.

If my experience there a short while ago is anything to go by, it’s best avoided at all costs. Today was so pathetic, I can’t help but think of it as “The Old Colon”. Yes, The Old Colon fits it nicely. A tired and unpleasant old organ that occasionally, but unreliably pumps out a load of crap.

We just popped in for a meal & paid over £28 for the privilage.

What we got was…

1. A very long wait for our starter. Which is understandable, as it takes quite some time to burn potato wedges in a fat fryer. I suspect we didn’t get any garlic mayonnaise as promised on the menu because burning the wedges took so long that it had gone off by the time they were ready.

2. Another long wait.

3. The severe irritation of watching our waitress pass right by us countless times while she bussed tables with no customers there.

4. The huge annoyance of having to take our own starter plate to the bar before another waitress stopped gassing to the barman, got of her backside and went to find out where our meals were.

5. Another wait.

6. Steak and ribs where the steak was more of a sliver than a steak. Not to mention it was well done not medium as ordered. Ribs covered in a sugary packet sauce. The ribs were delivered on top of the steak as if if to hide the embarrassingly small size.

7. Two meals with “Salad”. what can I say except that I take more care presenting a salad to my guinea pigs in the back yard than whoever prepared the sorry excuse for a salad the we were insulted with.

8. The distinct feeling that once our money was in the till, we were another couple of hapless tourists that stupidly handed over their cash while the staff had a good laugh at the bar all day rather than do any real work.

Why not pay them a visit? Just don’t get out of the car, carry on up the sea front, a nice drive down the toll road and eventually you’ll get to the Old Manor in Kewstoke, where you’ll pay less, get good service and much better food.
