Just off the main road, this is a large modern brewhouse which nonetheless is done-out quite well with lots of wood, dry hops and exposed brick, almost bierkeller-esque. The brew kit visible through plate glass on the far right. Very popular, it was two deep at the bar. Six (maybe more?) cask with a good number of theirs on. When in Rome etc, the Bitter was in great shape (NBSS 4) and the Bees Knees was decent too (3.5). A bustling atmosphere on the right side of raucous. Many dogs. Worth getting off the train for specially, it’s very good and GBG'22 listed. 8.5

I was glad that we visited the Hogs Head Brew House in the afternoon of a weekday, as I guess it could get pretty noisy and crowded in the evenings and at weekends. As it was, we had the place almost to ourselves and were able to take our time, look around, study the beers and engage with our bar tender. As well as eight beers on hand pump (two guests from Goose Eye and Beartown), there are too many keg taps to count, but beers are all listed on blackboards. I was able to try the beer that had been slightly off at my first pub of the day, the Loose Goose. This, like almost all the other beers, was brewed on the premises and named "6 - 8 Weeks" after the habitual answer they gave during development of the brewery tap when anyone asked how long it would be before they opened. This version of that beer was actually too fresh, which is better than being slightly off, but I missed some of the flavour that I had detected behind the acetic at the other pub. I had a half of another here, Hoppy Valley, which was in good condition but not really to my taste.

Re-visited the Hogs Head on Saturday evening just before 7pm and the place was very busy with no seating available. There was a barrel near the bar, presumably intended as a place to rest your glass if vertical drinking, was unfortunately draped in the coats of a happy couple who I think were dining. So we were left loitering slightly at the end of the bar, but no big deal. Eight hand pulls at the bar with six of their own ales on and two guests. The Hog IPA was good. There appeared to be some keg taps at the back of the bar on the right hand side and I later noticed a separate chalk board for the keg offerings which seemed to be reasonably priced. Service was quick despite the place being so busy. I really can't fault the place or its beer offering, and I am pleased to say it is as good as I remembered from my visit a year ago. It would be nice to spend a bit of time in here working your way through a few of their beers, but on Saturday night we visited as part of a small crawl so it was just a case of having one and moving on, and not giving in to temptation!
