Visited back in March. The bar sports six hand pulls offering three ales duplicated - at the time of my visit I think these were Blonde, Slumbering Monk and Pale. As has been mentioned, from the front there are two different styles of building which gives the impression of two buildings being knocked into one. I went for the Slumbering Monk and it set me back £1.70 for a half. This is a traditional feeling old pub although you can never tell with Joules as they are great at making their buildings look olde worlde. The front room was fairly bare in terms of seating with various tables and stools dotted around; a further room had comfortable banquette seating. Dogs appear to be welcome, a beer garden was signposted, and snacks are available. The gents were a bit basic and smelly, but adequate.

Looking like two buildings knocked into one although not, and renovated with Joules’ usual careful hand, a splendid version of an old pub, internally it also looks like two buildings with a dividing wall. It was once the Phoenix Tap as mentioned on WhatPub, and has signage for Bains & Co though probably not original. The right hand room has a fishy motif while the left most part contains the counter and a mix of seating, casks as tables and a wood burner; its banquette seating in the fishy room. Six pulls but doubled up with Joules beers on this occasion, Blonde, Pale and the lovely Slumbering Monk, fortunately I’m a big fan of Joules so take that Ray. Great beer and friendly staff, I was less enamoured of the constant 1980s music.

The bar area is positioned over on the left of the entrance and had a display of six handpumps, four Joules and two guest. Luckily for me they did have a couple of guest ales on, as I am not a big fan of Joules beers. Still I do like the traditional style of their pubs, so this was definitely one of them. We took our beers to the side room opposite the bar, which had a half partitioned frame in oak, with etched glass as the entrance. This area had red banquette seating and lots of curiosities around the walls, along with some old suitcases from the old shop they have extended into. I went for the Mallinson's Kiwi Calpso, which was a refreshing and pleasant summer beer.
