A large pub on the edge of Long Eaton's town centre, seemingly converted from a smart Victorian house. Once inside, my attention focused on the hand pumps, which numbered two, but with just Sharps Doom Bar available. My notes made at the time seem to read "lifeless but ok", but quite honestly they could mean almost anything. My admiration grew for Alan Winfield, who wrote reviews of every pub on his crawls even when there were 23 pubs - this was only number 15 on my Memorial Pub Crawl and I was already beyond writing anything that might constitute the basis for a coherent review.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Sportsman
Oddly faces the side street rather than the main road, and rather dominated by its car park. Two bars inside: a very lively Games Room bar, plus a quieter lounge. Semi-modern refurb. Several patio benches outside. Harvest Pale and Rocking Rudolph (£3.00) from the two handpumps.

The Sportsman was originally a club called the Granville club,it then changed its name to Flames which was also a club, this venture did'nt last that long and the Sportsman opened in the late 70s.
The pub was a Bass tied house when we used to go in it before having a crawl round Long Eaton.
Once inside there is an oblong shaped room to the front, this room is divided into two halfs, the bar is in the right side.
The room is carpeted and had mainly settees as seating with comfy chairs, there is a smaller room to the rear which had a large screen but not swithed on.
Thyere were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Castle Rock Harvest Pale which went down very well on a warm day,the other beer was Morland Old Golden Hen.
This is a smart and pleasant pub to have a drink in.
