This pub has now been taken over by Stancill Brewery and presents a large range of their beers on hand pump at astonishing prices, plus various guest keg beers at prices that astonish at the other end of the spectrum. All their own cask beers are priced at £2.50 per pint, but if you are in possession of a current Camra membership card (preferably your own) you will instead be charged just £2 for that pint. I called in tonight on my way home from work and had a pint of Barnsley Bitter - my favourite Porter being unavailable due to excessive demand over the "festive" period. Definitely an improvement.

It's good to see the old Albion pub revived after looking likely to be put to other uses when it closed a couple of years ago. There's no external signage yet, just a discrete notice on the door, an A-board with the pub's new name standing on the pavement, and the cryptic message "is this it?" spelt out in the front window. Inside there's obviously been some money spent, but some of the walls are still bare plaster, so it appears to be a work in progress. Furniture appears to have been acquired from second hand shops, and the pictures on the walls from house clearances. However, there are a couple of what could reasonably be described as works of art, too. Beside the bar was what I took to be an old Columbia label 45 in a frame, but closer examination showed it to be in fact a painting of the Dave Clark Five's single Glad All Over in its sleeve.

Some real record sleeves adorn the wall behind the DJ console which sits facing the bar, and a few of these were from some pretty dicey records. Fortunately the music emanating at quite a decent volume from the speakers was of a better and more interesting quality.

The bar itself is a handsome brute, in classic dark wood with panelled mirrors at knee level and a massive brass rail at elbow height. Five hand pumps further adorn the bar counter, and the beers available were Tetleys Bitter, Fox SHS (Special Hops Service), Sheffield Brewery Co's Bianco Blonde and Wentworth Bumble Beer. There was an out of kilter price list on a blackboard - only Tetleys was on both the bar and the list. Keg offerings included foreign lagers, Guinness and cider. I went for the SHS, which is one of those startling beers made from new hops, with an aroma of guavas. It was OK, but not something I would go out of my way to drink again.

This pub is a welcome addition to this area, and I will certainly call in again (it's on my way home from work).
