Smallish bar at the base of the Stanley Hotel. A live music venue with a CAMRA slant – check-out the framed aged What's Brewing covers! Decor pleasingly alehouse in style - tatty dark varnish wood, brick, sodium style lighting. A good soundtrack was being played at a sensible volume. Ten pumps with nine cask on, five from their pet brewery (West Coast Rock) plus four others. My Tangerine Dream was pretty tidy (NBSS 3.5). Also some keg stuff on the back wall. A nice bustling atmosphere and I enjoyed my 30 minutes in here.

Visited on Sunday. Still has 10 hand pulls, 9 of which were on (5 of their own plus 4 guests). The Wonky Donkey IPA was very nice and no complaints about the price at £3.25 for the pint. Various keg taps too.

Food is still served - pies were advertised for £2.95 plus 50p extra for gravy, in addition to pizzas, smoked footlong sausages, and nachos.

Fairly quiet at the time of my visit on Sunday late afternoon, though there were a few other customers dotted about. Music was playing. TV screens are present but were switched off at the time of my visit.

Plenty to go at on the pumps if you like cask ale and it's one I will seek out again.

No raucous groups at the bar this lunch time. 10 hand pulls for cask ale, a split of five of their own beers and five guests (though one of the guests was off). 10 craft keg type taps on the back wall in addition. Their Stout was £1.65 for a half, as were most of their own cask ales. Some of the guests were more expensive, but not by much.

Meals are served, consisting mainly of pizza, large smoked hot dogs, that kind of thing. It's family friendly as you would expect for the food offered. The young lady behind the bar appeared to be running the whole place, running the bar and kitchen and taking food orders out. This did mean there was a slight delay in getting served but she was very apologetic and it was certainly no big deal.

This is a pleasant pub with some character. Possibly some memorabilia may have come from the nearby Pump & Truncheon, as a "Police Enquiries" sign looked rather familiar. I noticed two TV screens, one was showing a TripAdvisor review page of the venue and the other was acting as a virtual fish tank.

Old copies of CAMRA's "What's Brewing" from 1989 were in frames. There was table football to the back of the pub. Dog friendly and free Wi-Fi.

I would love to spend longer here some time and drink my way through the beers. I felt the atmosphere was more relaxed than the nearby No. 13 Bonny Street that I visited beforehand. Music was playing and was pleasant and at a sensible volume.

One to return to!
