Outside Didcot town centre, the former Wallingford Arms experienced a period of closure and one thought such an event would spell the end of its innings as a going pub concern, considering the plot it occupies. However, it was resurrected as The Mulberry - taken over by the owners of The Blueberry in nearby Blewbury. The result is a massive improvement from the keg-only dive that existed before. Still open plan, mini divisions have been put in to give drinking-only customers some refuge from dining (to the left on entry) and there's a mix of all kinds of seating styles. The interior is a cross between Farrow & Ball and Charles Well's new 'Pizza, Pints & Pots' chain pubs, but at least the exposed brickwork here looks neat. Three local ales - Loose Cannon's Abingdon Bridge and Recoil along with West Berks Good Old Boy (a fourth pump was redundant). £3.80 for a pint of the Recoil and a good pint it was. A great turnaround (Oxfordshire seems to have had a few of late) even if the Radio 1 style muzak started to become a little grating.

The Wallingford Arms consists of a sparsely furnished main bar area and a conservatory extension to the left hand side of the pub. The DJ booth located in the corner and the ‘party time’ advertisement on the 4x4 out the front are a giveaway to the demographic this pub aims itself at. Plasma screens are found throughout and BT sport was muted in favour of some background music from the jukebox.
The bar is stocked with standard draught and one of the two hand pumps was unused leaving Hobgoblin as the ale option. I didn’t note any availability of food.
Out the front is a beer garden full of picnic tables with views of a busy roundabout.
This is not a pub I will be rushing back to.

No ale to be seen when we peered through the window, so gave it a miss. Given comments elsewhere perhaps that was good fortune...
