ORIGINAL REVIEW November 2012
Soupy describes the interior very well,it was pleasant to see a real fire in the Victorian fireplace in the front room on a cold evening.Several of the handpumps were not in use, with Hobgoblin the only guest. The Warwickshire Beer Co. brews have a house style which is fine if you like sweet ale with a strong caramel flavouring and minimal hop character but that's not for me.The pub was noticeably quiet despite hosting a quiz night, compared to the days when it was a free house. The loud muzak failed to lift the atmosphere.Despite an authentic interior and good refurb, this was a one pint visit before departing for better options in town.
UPDATE
After a long perios of closure this pub has reopened as a free house featuring a lot of real ale.Thankfully the Warwickshire Brewery and their awful beer departed several years ago.
The interior is unchanged, front tap room with traditional furniture, smaller back lounge.
Real ale on my trip Butcombe Gold,Abbeydale Pardoner Session IPA,Black Lodge Going Down to Lincoln and Baltic Best (NBSS good),Theakston Old Peculier,Palmers Hop & Glory (NBSS very good) and Bang the Elephant Its All In The Hips (NBSS very good).Thats a very decent range of styles and strengths and every pint was well conditioned. There were also 9 wall mounted keg taps offering a sparkling cider,Veltins Pilsner and indie beers from Fierce,Ansbach & Hobday London Black,a Verdant,Polly's ,Big Hug and two clips I couldn't make out. That seemed like a decent keg range too.
A top drinking venue and a great double header with the Angel on the otherside of the Market Square and a pub I will most certainly return to.A big upgrade from me.

Lovely old boozer with a pleasant outlook to the market place. A busy front room with a relatively small bar leads to a quieter small back room, and off to the side is a staircase to the first floor where a couple of rooms provide additional seating. The beer I had was of excellent quality that I felt the need to comment on as I left. Marvellous place, well deserving of its GBG entry.

The Market Tavern is back in the Good Beer Guide at the expense of the Angel Ale House. Certainly the beer quality here was very good, but so it was at the Angel, according to my notes made at the time. Perhaps they take turn and turn about. It was quite busy when we got here towards the end of our pub research trip, and two or three had dropped out. With the likes of Cairngorm's Black Gold, CAMRA's Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2025, and the ever reliable Purple Moose Brewery (or Bragdy Mŵs Piws) with their Cwrw Eryri on the bar, I was going nowhere. (There were two other beers on, but three naked hand pumps - this on a Friday night in summer.) But when I left my glass of the latter on the table while making an essential visit to the recycling facility, some over-eager member of staff took it away, despite there being two glugs left. I complained to the landlord and he gave me three-quarters of a glass full, with instructions to down it, which I did in one. I can remember very little of my subsequent visit to the Angel across the square, but I'll remember my visit to the Market Tavern fondly.
