Apparently there’s some rule that says we’re not supposed to talk about this pub, however: as described by Blackthorn below, this low-grade town bar remains uninspiring, dull and devoid of real ale. The staff were pleasant enough, the two girls at the entrance eventually let us in to go to the bar, but the barmaid seemed a bit clueless. The craft offerings were Neck Oil and Brixton Reliance, supplemented by Orchard Thieves Cider, Guinness, Moretti, Amstel and Heineken on tap, plus a load of bottled and tinned miscellanea. They seem to major on shots and overpriced formulaic cocktails, paired with expensive trendy bar snacks but none of this hit the bull as far as I’m concerned. If you’re a prosecco-drinking vegan it would be a double top, though. y

A recent opening on the site of the former Pranj’s bar, it gets it’s name from the fact that it’s USP is darts, with multiple boards being sited around the walls of the pub. They’re not just stuck on the wall though like your more traditional pub, but inset in to illuminated recessed circles with a video screen above keeping track of who’s turn it is to play next and the score. These all seemed to be in use with crowds of noisy youngsters, which perhaps accounts for the doorman accosting us on the way in to ask if we had booked. As we were only there for a drink though, this was not an issue.

In some way they seem to have gone for quite an elegant look with stained glass panels in the front window spelling out the pub name, floral wallpaper on the walls, red velvet drapes behind the bar and details such as illuminated tiling behind some of the seating. Dotted around the walls that weren’t filled with dart boards were a selection of old clocks and various items of chinaware such as miniature Toby jugs, porcelain figurines and glass decanters. This all contrasted somewhat though not only with the noise levels and darts players but also the bare concrete joists on the ceiling along with associated cable trays and air conditioning ducting as well as some type of bare screed on the floor. A large “Push for Service” button was set in to the brass table we were sat at, but having already purchased a drink at the bar, we did not test it’s effectiveness.

There were no real ales on tap unfortunately, with just a couple of keg options consisting of Harviestoun Neck Oil and a Brixton Pale Ale. The solitary cider meanwhile was Orchard Thieves.

One of the many bars in Corn Street to change it’s name every few months, this has previously been The John Cabot and BSB among others, and I think was also the Slug & Lettuce for a short while before they moved over the road.

In it’s current incarnation it has some wood boards on the floor with tiling nearer the bar and a colour scheme that uses shades of brown and cream normally found in a gastro-pub, although clearly that’s not what this is. There is a pool table at the front surround by a couple of tatty red sofas. The bar counter on the right had large illuminated green panels affixed to the front of it, and it looked as though there was another smaller bar at the back, perhaps more geared up for cocktails. This appeared to have some blue illumination as far as I could make out without inspecting it closely. The rear area is raised up a step or two and separated by some wooden balustrade.

At about 8:45 on a recent Thursday evening visit, the lights dropped a bit and the music was turned up a little too loud. There are several big speakers about as well as a glitter ball, other lighting effects and a DJ console, hinting that it may perhaps get considerably louder still as the evening wears on. Fortunately we did not hang around to find out. There were a few potted plants around, and what looked as though they may have been Christmas decorations hanging from the ceiling.

Someone outside was enticing punters in with the offer of a free shot, and we had something called Apple Sour. It looked somewhat artificially green, but other than that was OK I suppose. The menu appeared to consist entirely of hot dogs and pizza. A number of plasma screens were dotted around showing the football.

The solitary beer on tap was Doom Bar, whilst ciders were Strongbow and Thatcher’s Gold.
