This is an old pub that is a in a residential area a brisk 10 minute walk from Brecon town centre. The bar is very spacious and tidy but has suffered from an unsympathetic renovation probably in the last twenty years or so. Beers on hand pump were Wadworth 6X and Brains Reverend James, neither of which grabbed me so I opted for the Brooklyn Stonewall IPA to refresh myself after the walk here (£4.50 a pint). Dogs are allowed and food is available. If it were my local I would pop in now and again but I probably wouldn’t do the walk from Brecon again.

This is a nice little roadside pub, just across the river from Brecon in the adjoining village of Llanfaes. There are exposed beams and joists in natural wood, and with the bar and floorboards also being in light coloured wood there is a modern feel to the place. This is emphasised by the furniture and decor. The mid-afternoon drinkers, who I took to be locals, were a talkative bunch. There were two hand pumps at the far end of the bar, with 9 Lives Gold and Greene King IPA: not the most awe-inspiring of offerings, but at least the 9 Lives was in good condition. As this was the first pub that I'd found to be open since setting out three hours previously, I was glad to be here, and by the same token I dare say I wouldn't mind popping in again.

I went to the Drovers at 10pm on Friday night as a recce for our canoe club. It is the nearest pub to the bunkhouse we stayed at.
The two beers were undrinkable. I had a Wye Valley bitter that was sour. My son had the Brains beer was almost as bad. I left most of my pint.
It was the first and last time in this pub. If the landlord was on holiday he need to ensure his substitute knows what he is doing.
Sheer incompetence or laziness meant that 20 thirsty and hungry paddlers did not book in for a meal and drinks on Saturday evening.
