The advantage of a Spoons' in an old hotel is that it has an assortment of drinking areas of different styles, rather than one massive room and this is no exception. The bar lurks somewhere in the middle and there are various parts leading off, including a small glass conservatory, as well as some outdoor café-style patio areas. Sadly the terrible trio of beers still took up half of the pumps, with Brain's SA the only Welsh brew in evidence.

This opened as a Spoons on the 21st of February. Although it is one of their hotels there are only four rooms which seems odd considering there is quite a lot of space for the pub side of it. The Evan Evans brewery were the previous owner or lessee but why they gave it up is anyone's guess.
Inside it's a rambling sort of place that has various seating areas and the bar at the rear. Being a new Spoons the fixtures and fittings are better than average. As is common with new Spoons the food is dearer than average. It was quite busy on my Wednesday evening visit but they were woefully short staffed so getting served was a real problem until the food orders subsided.
There are two banks of six hand pumps which had one unused, the JDW Trio Of Doom doubled, Evan Evans St David's Ale, Grainstore 1050, Brecon Six Beacons, Vale Of Glamorgan Dark Matter and Loddon Hullabaloo. I went for the St David's Ale and the 1050 but completely forgot to write down the prices. They were both in decent enough nick.
This Spoons seemed OK but they do apparently have a staffing problem.

Technically a 16 bedroom Hotel, the George Hotel also functions as one of the main eating and drinking places in the centre of Brecon, with both the bar and conservatory restaurant dining area being open to the public.
The traditional decor bar is wood floored and the serving area is either side of some central pillars that divide the bar space into two sections. And then beyond the bar is the large modern glass roofed conservatory which is mainly used for dining. And then the conservatory opens out onto a pleasant enclosed courtyard which usually has outside tables with large umbrellas.
Then there is a largish function room off to the side of this which is usually utilised for weddings and other such events.
The Hotel is owned by the deliciously named Welsh brewery of Evan Evans from Llandeilo and during my stay in Brecon three of their local Welsh beers were available on the four pumps in the bar with Stomper and Cwrw from the Evan Evans brewery complemented by Liberty from Archers , which although being a former Wiltshire brewer, seem to be producing in the Evan Evans facilities.
The Cwrw was a good session beer and went down easily, in fact far too easily as my reason to be here was the Brecon Jazz and fringe festivals, and without a bit of self control I could have been in no fit state for some of the evening bands. And if the barmaid was to be believed and she wasn’t pulling this particular Englishman’s plonker “Cwrw” is Welsh for beer, so a great bit of naming by Evan Evans who can rightly serve this to any tourist who enters asking for a beer.
Cannot really give a rating to any of the places in Brecon I experienced as the Jazz festival weekend is not representative of how they function the rest of the year.
But for a place during the Fringe it was probably my favourite venue, closely followed by The Clarence and the Boars Head, as the Evan Evans Brewery run their own Music village in the hotel during the fringe, with the acts playing on a stage on the far side of the courtyard when the weather was good, and in the function room when it wasn’t. And the standard of the acts they had on always seemed to be a cut above the others available in town during the Fringe.
