Wedge-shaped pub somewhat hidden away in an industrial area, but doing surprisingly good business on a Friday afternoon. It retains two separate bars, one quite basic but the lounge looked a bit smarter. No real ale (or any keg bitter either, as far as I could tell), so made do with an extra-cold Carling (£3.20) before heading for Duddeston station.

a detached V-shaped corner pub, with benches outside. The pub is Victorian, and stands opposite the Nechells Gas Works and has also survived when all about it has been demolished. The pub is mainly in plain brick, with some white render and black paintwork. It has a decorative cornice and entablature above the doors and windows. The corner entrance is now closed and two separate entrances provide access to the bar and lounge respectively. I didn't see much of the lounge, although I could see through and see some Irish themed pictures and a pull-down screen (not in use) and it seemed quite tidy - all the few locals in were in the lounge. The bar is in coffee and chocolate split walls, with a small pool room that had local footy team pictures up. The main part of the bar had a few mirrors and a TV showing some film. There was a jukebox, though no music. They do breakfasts and sandwiches. The service was friendly. Beer; no real ale, no MILD - I just had a shandy. It was nice to return for the first time since the 80s.

Local pub in industrial heartland of Birmingham, possibly better than you may expect, nothing pretty, but its smart and comfortable enough. Friendly service and a real ale in Greene King IPA. The sort of pub we should be trying to keep in business, because they are making an effort.
