This is a detached corner pub and Grade II listed. This one is a puzzle. It claims to date to 1897, but there is clearly a building on the same site before that, which also has a corner entrance and a bay window, as this pub does. The red brick and stone fits more with the 1897 date, but it appears theat the pub was rebuilt in 1925 after a fire in what is really an outdated style. The pub has a couple of rooms, as well as a function room that i did not see. Entry is into a glazed tile lobby, from which all rooms are accessed, as well as the toilets, which were once over the courtyard (now covered). The bar is to the right - it has a nice wood bar that also serves, via a hatch, the lounge at the rear (in darkness at my visit). The bar is in green and a cream flower patterned wallpaper, with a green ceiling. The TV was not on and the music was general at a decent level. A small fireplace is present, and small bench seats. The doors have etched glass. The service was really friendly, and it is clearly a good locals pub - friendly too. A few trophies are dotted about, but there is little in the way of pictures. Beer; usual tap stuff with a decent Ansells' MILD, as well as a decent Church End Brewery's Goat's Milk. A fantastic little pub - a great stop-off and a true locals place - but also architecturally worth a visit. I will visit this place again.
