Similar vibe to the three previous reviews, this pub is on a road that wends its way up a smallish hill in Heath End / Upper Hale and remains two-roomed internally. My early Saturday afternoon visit found four locals in the public bar and a deserted jump; only the kindness of one of the old boys to go off and find someone, prevented me from experiencing a builders' merchants' infamous "long stand". With just Hogs Back TEA on offer from three handpumps (two unclipped) and no-one else on the ale, there was the solo ale-drinker's unease, but what I splashed out £4.80 for was a beer in fine fettle (NBSS 4); something which echoes previous reviews. Wine bottle cork wallpaper on the walls in the Public bar, dominating by large screen TV showing Tipping Point to no-one in particular. Smallish Saloon Bar semi-cordoned off and rather 'front room' in appearance (random cuddly toys on seats?), but the barmaid/landlady was apologetic and pleasant and at least the old boys bade me a farewell on my departure. To be fair, I only popped in as a) I was in the area, and b) the nearby Alfred doesn't open until 5pm on a Saturday, but a tick is a tick, and based on the beer quality, slightly above average is the fairest way to go.

A very pleasant local pub, Victorian in origin but substantially rebuilt in the 1920s. There is a paved garden at the back with tables and benches, which is used for family barbecues. Two distinct bar areas, a public bar on the left with a dartboard, and a saloon bar on the right with an open fireplace and comfortable seating. The sound system was delivering local radio, the staff were very welcoming and the locals friendly. Three ales on – I had a pint of 6X which was in very god condition. Sadly there was no food on but I'd be happy to come back and try it when there is.

Two room locals joint in a pretty little building, formerly owned by Greene King if the exterior signage is anything to go by (it’s now labelled as a freehouse). Two narrow bars inside with access to both at either end of the bar in the left hand room. Décor-wise, it’s third length varnish wood panelling and red painted upper. Dart board and horse racing on the telly which seemed popular with the locals. Decent patio garden with kids play area. Old-school meat raffle advertised. Four pumps with a pretty poor (for a supposed freehouse) selection of GK IPA, Pride, TT Landlord (fair) and Waddies 6X. These were almost inaccessible as the bar was screened by locals sat in high chairs who wouldn’t shift or acknowledge your presence attempting to squeeze between them and taking beers over the top – a sure-fire way to put off the casual punter. A visit where I very much felt like I was intruding and I doubt I’d see the need to return.
