In a quiet part of Stafford Town centre this street corner pub is owned by Black Country Ales and has an interior worthy of close inspection.It's all very traditional ,enter from the apex door and you come into a seating area with sports flatscreens,green leather banquettes and a small bar with just the usual 3 BCA house beers.Through some doors marked as Smoking Room to a large rear section with more flatscreens ,and french windows to a beer garden. Carry on around the interior to a back snug,quiet with a real fireplace before another room which houses the guest ale handpumps manned by tweo chatty and cheeky barmaids.On my visit the guests were Salopian Altitude (NBSS Very Good),Hop Back Calypso,Lincoln Green Meadow Song,Derby Dashing Dark,Byatts Amarillo Session IPA(NBSS Good) and Fixed Wheel Hen Rage (NBSS Good). A solid range,keen pricing and a friendly atmosphere make this a standout pub when in Stafford,it would be a serious mistake to miss out.I will be back.

While I'm as much a fan of Black Country Ales pubs as the next PG reviewer, I can't help noticing that they do tend to staff them in a Wetherspoons style, with one or maybe two overworked staff rushing to and fro, trying to keep up with the demand. Fortunately it's not as manic as your average JDW here and you will be served in the correct order.
In most respects, The Shrewsbury is true to BCA style, with a similar range, at fair prices (£4.30 for my pint), and with the ales listed on a screen, though this was neither obvious nor up to date here in the Shrewsbury.
Carpets, furnishings and cobs are equally familiar to anyone who's visited one of their pubs. Fortunately the company do what they do pretty well.

Four Black Country beers are on a section of the bar in the room near the front door, with two banks of three for guest beers in the next room. I went for Salopian Bauhaus 4.2% and Stonehenge 40 Summers 4.0% which averaged NBSS 3.75 between them. It's good to see this pub in the Good Beer Guide and serving beer of the appropriate quality.
