The layout and concept is as described by others, below, but either I’ve been very unlucky or the business itself is very flaky. On three separate occasions I’ve come here to get a pint, given that it’s the closest thing to a pub in the immediate area, only to find that whilst open, it has been unable to serve anything on draft. On my latest attempt there was a bank of keg supplemented by two clipped handpumps, but when I asked for a pint of Tribute, I was told that they were unable to dispense any draft beer, and if I wanted beer it would have to be bottled at a ridiculous mark-up. The staff were less than friendly, the manager caustic, there was no pub atmosphere, the whole event was a frustrating waste of time. I’m unlikely to try again given the number of alternative outlets nearby.

The Crown is a split-level pub with small seating areas at the front and stairs up to the bar area and more seating beyond. The L-shaped serving counter supports four handpumps that were drawing St Austell’s Tribute and Proper Job alongside a couple of Weston’s Rosie’s Pig Ciders. Premium keg is also available and the food menu consists mainly of pizza. The main demographic during my recent midweek evening visit seemed to be students who had all congregated in the rear seating area for a quiz. I wouldn’t go out of my way to revisit, but I do like a pint of Proper Job so would be tempted back in if passing.

An attractive looking pub located adjacent to the historic St Nicholas Market, this has recently re-opened after a spell of closure and has apparently had something of a refurbishment as well according to reports in the local press. If that’s the case I didn’t really notice anything significantly different from the last time I was here, other than perhaps a lick of paint. It’s still very much a no frills boozer, and I can imagine that the odd tourist popping in on spec might be a little disappointed.
Internally it’s a reasonable size on several levels with the largest room being up a few steps at the rear. At the front are two smaller rooms with a couple more steps between them. Décor wise it’s broadly similar throughout, with black wooden boards on the floor that have been worn smooth over the years, some painted wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and wallpaper that has been painted a deep red colour, both on the upper par of the walls and the ceiling. It seems to have something of a goth theme to it, with several skulls dotted around, and a neon sign at the back of the rear room said Welcome to the Jungle. The significance of this escaped me, although the plastic foliage affixed to the walls, tree printed wallpaper and even a few stuffed parrots clinging to the wall did add something of a jungle ambience I suppose.
Beers on tap were Dartmoor Jail Ale, Tribute and Proper Job, whilst a fourth pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Haze and Bounders. Bar staff seemed a little disinterested, with one of them quite blatantly ignoring me, even though he didn’t seem particularly busy doing anything else.
