Well described by others below, we found ourselves in an atmospheric bar on the ground floor, an oasis of calm in Bristol. The barman was cheerful and welcoming, a large Labrador-cross made us feel welcome and there were a couple of people enjoying an intimate drink together. The downside was the drink situation – an unappetising Pilsner on tap, and two beers in cans only, plus a wide range spirits and cocktails. I risked a beer from a can, which was served in a heavy glass so cold that ice was forming on the beer’s surface. The novelty value was limited in duration, and the can of beer was extortionately expensive. I think there are other places to explore before I come back.

The Rummer as described below is slightly wrong as this is a pub of various parts and names and the true Rummer was the part of the pub with the entrance on High Street if I recall correctly from my student days in the late 90's. It's rumoured to be opening again so we will have to wait and see. The now Hotel bit had a different name if I recall correctly as I did frequent this pub a fair bit.

Anybody else remember it as I do or am I making it all up?

It's debateable whether this should be classed as a pub or not since there is not a single hand pump on the bar, but it's listed on this site so I might as well leave a review.

For starters it's a massive improvment on the old Rummer, even if it has lost some of it's character in the process. For a start it doesn't smell of sick and you don't stick to the carpet. In fact there isn't a carpet to stick to, they've put some rather smart slate tiles in. They obviously major on shorts rather than beer, and even when requesting a simple G&T the barman was keen to show off his cocktails skills, chucking around the bottle opener, catching the top from the bottle with his heel, etc.

The drinks list runs to around 20 gins, and 50 whiskies. Unfortunately not such a good choice on the beer/cider/lager front, although there were probably around a dozen. A couple of beers from Wickwar, and both of the ciders from Dunkertons (and both 7%!).

A bit pricey at £8+ for a cider and a G&T, but I guess it's that sort of place. Worth popping in if you're nearby and want to see what it's like, especially if you knew the old Rummer, but I don't think it's going to be a destination venue for many of the regulars on this site.
