How very sad to look up the Canal Tavern on Google Maps and find that it is no longer there. It was operated by my mother's grandmother's nephew before 1900 (when it was called the Gas Tavern!), and my mum and I visited the tavern on a trip to England from Canada in 1994. We raised a glass and were kindly given a tour of a canal boat by one of the canal boat fellows who made the tavern their local. I guess it had a good long run but I'm sorry to see it gone. Hello to anyone who happens by, who knew and loved it!

The Canal Tavern is an end of terrace pub that faces the canal,it is a short walk from the town centre to get to this pub.
Once inside the pub had two rooms and i had a drink in a fairly basic bar.
The pub was being run by the Nice Pub Company at the time of my visit and there were no real ales on the bar with the only bitter being John Smiths smooth crap so i had a Guinness.
This was a very basic pub with not a lot going for it when i went in it,i hope things have improved here since my visit.
