Located next to the River Trent with ample riverside seating, Brewhouse is a long and thin L-shaped pub with open plan seating at the front and down the left opposite the long bar counter. Premium and craft keg were available alongside three hand pumps that were drawing their own brews plus a guest. After ordering half of their 5% Golden Ale I was very surprised to be charged £4.95. I challenged the barmaid, but she insisted that the price was correct. I enquired about the price of a pint, she informed me that it was around £6. So I politely asked why a pint was £6 and a half almost £5. “I don’t set the prices” was the retort. Just then a group came in, so I advised them to steer clear of ordering half pints of the homebrew. This riled the barmaid as she warned me to “please stop discouraging our customers”. The commotion drew a second barmaid into the conversation, who quickly confirmed that a half was in fact £2.95, which is still very expensive. I was refunded the full amount as way of an apology, but no apology from the mardy maid who stormed off out the back. Not a great experience.

I am a big fan of this chain and was impressed with this latest venture over looking the river Trent and housed in this fine looking Gothic building. As usual I went for the 1899 Pale Ale, which was in tip top condition.

Brewhouse and Kitchen is the latest face of the former Riverbank pub/restaurant next to Trent Bridge on the Victoria Embankment. I never ventured to the former venue so cannot comment on how the layout has changed but there has definitely been a substantial investment that is obvious at first glance. The interior is very large with huge high ceilings and an L shaped bar that runs across the back wall. There are no carpets just hard wooden floors and lots of exposed brick and metal furnishings like you get in these modern places. There are lots of tables and chairs but mostly tall stools but there is a row of long benches across the front windows with their own long tables that large groups can all sit around. Food is a big player in the daytime but I did not see anyone eating at 8 on a Saturday evening although there is a large dining area at the back that I did not wonder into so assume there would have been diners in there. Because the pub brews their own beer all eight hand pulls where clipped with their own offerings with several different varieties of bitter, pale and IPA. I asked to sample the two bitters but was told only one was available and that the other had ran out (there was no sign/clip reversed which I thought was bad practice). Looking at the food menu and based on its prime riverside location I was expecting to be fleeced but was pleasantly surprised to only be charged £3.50 for a 3.5% bitter, ok it was a weak beer but I still felt the price was reasonable especially compared to the price of their food! The beer was a very decent effort and was well kept, it’s not going to set the word on fire but I thought it was s decent drop served in their tall stein type beer glasses (beer was topped up unprompted). The demographic of the place was very male orientated with the majority of the punters young lads in their early 20’s loading up before hitting the town. I don’t think this is really the vibe they a are going for so maybe work needs to be done here to change this but overall I was pretty impressed. I would return on a hot day as the beer garden overlooking the river would be really nice.
