KINGS FAIRWAY - is still...the best pub in Ashford! They've just had a major re-vamp, having been closed for a week for work & refurb. You may notice the new round wooden tables (inside) and new furnishings, shelving, ornaments, etc. Some money has been spent smartening up the place. Peroni is their best lager on draught, they also do Becks 4per cent. 'Doom Bar' was also selling well. Their Sunday night wine offer still stands, £8 for any bottle of wine after 5pm on a Sunday! I have to comment on their food... I was disappointed with my steak last time, THE most expensive meal on their menu, and they made a hash of it!! TWICE...!! I will not be ordering steak here anymore. Since then, I've been back and ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was OK I suppose, but again disappointing when accompanied by boring crisps and one piece of lettuce and a small onion ring, that was advertised as a "salad"..!! FOOD = DISAPPOINTING :o( Apart from that, I still like the pub...because, as 'Roger' below helpfully points out...there's precious else competition in the neighbourhood! 6/10

Well, what can I say about the good ol' Kings Fairy...!! I like it. It's the BEST pub in Ashford. And Roger Button has given a fair overall review. The 'KF' must be benefitting from the lack of pubs in Ashford high st., or near the train station. But it does lack character, and I feel like a 'stranger' whenever I venture in, and its always different staff, none seem to stay there long. On a good note, they do have regular Quiz Nights (I think its Wednesday+Sunday nights...) Tuesday is curry night, £5 or £6 for one drink and a curry. And Sundays after 6pm you can get ANY bottle of wine in the pub for £8. That's useful to know. Sometimes on a Friday night you won't be able to get a seat in KF, its that popular. The decor is unusual, and not everyone's cup of T.E.A. And if you take your own 'atmo' with you when you go in, you should have a fine evening! :o) As I said, the best pub in TW15.

This Ember Inn is situated opposite Ashford Manor golf course hence the pub name and that of its predecessor the Links Hotel that I understand was destroyed by fire about 30 years ago. The Kings Fairway was itself victim of a major fire in 2006 after which it was virtually rebuilt to what it is now.

Ashford isn’t exactly brimming with pubs and with the closure of the Royal Hart, the Kings Fairway is now one of the closest to the town centre, albeit a good 10/15 minute walk. Is it worth it? If you desperately need a pub in Ashford then probably yes but don’t expct a pub that oozes character. What you get is a fairly contrived modern pub with a bit of a Harvester feel to it. The open nature of the interior has been broken up by a few pillars and wall remnants so it is a little more intimate than it could be. Modern art adorns the walls and by the main entrance is a large glass display case laden with wine bottles. A small raised sofa lounge can be found behind the left hand side of the bar.

The ale choice was disappointing given other reports and the presence of a beer menu quoting a list of 12 winter ales rotating throughout the current season. None of these were to be found and just the 3 ales were available across 6 hand pumps - a rather mundane selection of Abbott, Speckled Hen and Courage Directors. A 4th (the now ubiquitous Doom Bar) was reversed and the other 2 pumps doubled up. On the plus side all the ales were under £3 which is pretty good value compared to the other places I visited in the area and the quality was very good. The food consisted of a decent but typical PubCo range with all the usual suspects at reasonable prices (main courses from £6). There are also copycat Tuesday Grill and Thursday Curry evenings.

The place was quite busy on my Saturday evening visit with both drinkers and diners but then given the choices around town, that is probably not a great surprise. It will certainly appeal to pub/restaurant fans and after a lengthy walk from Ashford football ground it was a welcome sight but I can’t help feel the pub’s popularity is more down to the lack of anything else around than its own merits.
