This was the first of Upwey's 2 pubs that we tried late on Saturday afternoon. It was the quietest of the two, but my favourite.

Doom Bar is the regular ale. On this visit, Hobgoblin was the guest.

Just a couple of other customers were present when we arrived and one of those soon left. But the remaining customer and the young barman proved to be friendly and chatty.

The customer was introducing the barman to various music tracks using Alexa. I Am a Cider Drinker by the Wurzels was played followed by something about a hole. I recommended Ernie (the Fastest Milkman in the West) which seemed to go down very well, with the barman adding it to his playlist. I fear for the good people of Upwey!

This characterful pub has a central bar with traditional seating round it. To the left is a restaurant area leading to the terraced side garden which has nice views, and to the right up a few steps are a small nook with sofas and bookcases and a function room/skittle alley beyond. Unsurprisingly a nautical theme, with pictures of old ships, etc, but not overdone. The bar has five hand pulls, offering Otter Ale, Ringwood Best, TT Landlord and Fullers Chiswick on our first visit, one of which had been replaced by Harviestoun’s Bitter & Twisted by our second. Beer quality was good. The food menu offered Sunday roasts at £8-9, and other mains at £10+, though not having eaten here I can’t say how good value they might be.

It felt very comfortable here, and it evidently had a lot of local custom – I think this and the Standard are the two Upwey pubs well worth drinking in. I’d happily return here.
