I had been trying to visit this one for some time, having heard great things, and my Spem in Alium was definitely rewarded – it was a brilliant visit.  The landlord insists it’s not a micro, so we went with that, but it has all the features of a good micro and an excellent alehouse.  The chat in the front bar was all-inclusive, the other customers were quite civilised and it was generally a very enjoyable evening – we stayed longer than intended.  Dogs are allowed in but not on the sofas, children are allowed in if well behaved, no cash is allowed as the barman doesn’t want to catch Covid off it and mobile phones are not permitted.  Cask ales on were Goff’s Doctor Sunshine and one from Tonbridge.  My only criticism is the balance between cask and craft, but that’s me being really picky.  I’ll definitely be back.

This bar-less micropub in an ancient building a couple of streets away from the cathedral is worth a visit just for being there: the beer is a bonus. My visit was towards the end of the evening, and having selected my half of Four Candles East Kent Bitter (from the three cask ales from that brewery - all the other beers were kegged) I found a seat and took advantage of the pub's wifi to keep abreast of the football scores on my mobile. The only two teams that could stop the Hatters being promoted both lost their matches, so I had a quiet celebration and found a special place in my memory for the Thomas Tallis.

Better than average micro pub by virtue of the fact its in a C15th building. No bar provides confusion to the unsuspecting - which we certainly were.

Waiter service and the indication of what is on is on a chalk board that simply lists brewery, beer name and strength. No indication of style.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Thomas Tallis Alehouse

Compact two-room alehouse, with surprisingly light decor but (still appropriate) furniture and decor. No counter, so just ask for your chosen beverage from the chalk board and it gets brought direct from the cellar. Westerham God's Wallop (£3.60) and Sail from the Ashford-based G2 Brewing were the cask beers that day, supplemented by 12 craft keg offerings. What really stood out from my first visit here on a winter's lunchtime was the friendly welcome as warm as the glow from the log fire in the side room.

A two roomed Tudor micropub with the cold room situated at the rear. You step down into the pub from the street and enter a small room where you can peruse the extensive beer board on the left hand wall. The pub offered a couple of cask ales, but the majority of the menu was on keg.
The young barman was pleasant and helpful and explained to us that the majority of their ales are on keg, as they will keep up to four weeks. We went for Tonbridge Brewery East Kent Capel Pale and East Kent Five Brewers Green Hop Collaboration, both from the cask, which were both excellent.
We were served our ales in the larger room, which had exposed black beams and a log burning fire, which was very inviting. The pub opened at 5pm on our Monday visit.

I turned up to this place with the owner on holiday and a stand in who was totally pleasant and friendly but didn't seem to have the authority or knowledge to deal with any problems so my score may not be what this place deserves.
As noted below it's an attractive old beamed building rather than the usual micropub shop conversion.
There were just two casks on but a whole raft of "Craft" keg. The two casks were Romney Marsh Mellow and Musket Matchlock Mild. I had to send the Marsh Mellow back as it was rank but the Mild was fine. Both were priced at £3.60 which is expensive for a micropub. The "Craft" keg were silly prices starting from £4.50. The few micropubs I've visited that serve "Craft" keg do it as an addition to a decent range of cask whereas this place seems to have things the other way round.
I doubt that I would return here.

A delightful heavily timbered pub adjacent to, and perhaps forming part of the curtilage of the ancient Hospital of St John in the Northgate area of Canterbury.Opened earlier this year as an Alehouse, it may or may not be an East Kent Micropub.
Coming off the street, where there are, in Summer at any rate, tables and chairs for al fresco drinking, one gets the impression of going down into the pub.The first little room has the beer menu on a blackboard-on my brief visit, cask beers from Goacher's and Tonbridge, though I gather that the choice is often wider, and a large array of beers in keykeg. Beer is stillaged and tapped in an inner sanctum, and brought out to the customer by informative and attentive staff.I found table service somewhat disconcerting, as I'm fairly fidgety, and like to see my beer being pulled, though the hidden tap room can be a feature of a Micro.
To the left of the servery room is a larger parlour, with woodburner and a collection of board games much in demand by the earnest , bearded clientele.Further on is an attractive and cosy snug, overlooking the grounds of the Hospital, still used as Almshouses.I sat in the parlour at a high table and drank a Saison l'Hiver from the inspirational Burning Sky brewery from East Sussex.
I really enjoyed this pub on a clammy Saturday early afternoon:calm and tranquil, monastic even.
