Alex Conway left this review about Old Volunteer

The old Volunteer is a former Hardys and Hansons turned Greene king pub that closed down but reopened in 2015 after a major refurbishment. It seems like this is now no longer under Greene Kings ownership as there were none of their beer available. Outside is all white rendered while inside things are very modern in a gastro pub style with hard wooden floors, beige walls and so on. There is also an outside are with fake grass to enjoy the weather like we did. This pub cannot be described as a boozer as on our Saturday lunchtime visit there were only four groups in including us and all of them were couples having lunch. Food is a big deal here and looked very nice but was on the pricey side.
On the bar were four real ales, Harvest pale, Timothy Taylors Landlord, as well as Wells and young’s Bombardier and Burning gold available. Not the most exciting line up ever but the Harvest pale was kept very well but that and a pint of coke was £6.60!! ill let you decide how much the beer was but however way you divide that a 3.8% local ale was expensive!
Overall this was a pretty decent place to stop off for a drink on a nice day walking through the Village. A bit too upmarket and gastro for my liking so not somewhere I would stay for ma session but for a bit to eat or a refreshment stop when passing it was very pleasant.

Less than a 10 min walk from Lowdham train station. This large pub has a modern interior and promotes Italian cuisine. I noted on a sign outside GK IPA was on promotion at £2.29 all day. The interior I felt was more suited to a city centre pub. There were two ales on offer IPA and Abbott, plenty of large keg fonts on bar. The pub was empty on our Friday afternoon visit, a hello would have been nicely received on entering the bar.

The Old Volunteer used to be a Kimberley tied house untill GK took over.
GK decided to close the pub down but it has now reopened and is leased from GK.
This is now more of a gastro type pub dong meals throughout the day there are a few real ales on the bar with most from the GK camp IPA, Abbot ect but the pub does have a local beer on from the Caythorpe brewery this can be Dover Beck or bitter.
This pub is a bit to upmarket for me but it is nice to see a pub reopening.

Photo taken before reopening.
