Need to keep your eyes peeled, even if it is on the main road. Its a converted Grade II listed house and not obviously a pub when looking directly face on. I had to do a double check, after consulting Google Maps - then noticed the sign about the front door.

Small, multi-roomed, with the bar to the left and two further rooms on the opposite corridor to the right. The bar had a fire going but was busy, so I went to the back room, where I found solitude but no fire.

Went for landlord and although it tasted fine - its was completely murky. It is my most checked in beer, so I know how it is meant to look. Guessing, I was last in the barrel. Not quite what you'd expect from a good beer Guide regular.

The conversation starter comes from a visit to the gents. A living tree is a unique feature!

Classic old multiroom pub, I was a bit disappointed at the cask choice of three Greene King beers (Ruddles, Belhaven and a GK), Landlord and one other which was the only interesting choice.
Beer condition was fine and the pub is as outstanding as ever. The GK thing might explain the poor makeover.

This place has been well described below. It's still three rooms and still has (a highlight for me) a proper outside Gents where the tree is still thriving.
There are five hand pumps that had AJ's IPA, Robinson's Dizzy Blonde, St Austell Tribute, Greene King Festival Ale and a cider. I went for the AJ's IPA (£3.40) which was in good nick.
It may have had an ill advised makeover at some point in the past but I really liked it. It gets a strong 8.

What a shame. From the outside this is a most pleasing building, with a small garden leading to the front door.Internally it has the classic midland central corridor with the tap room first left and two seperate rooms to the right in the form of a front and back snug. The outside gents in the courtyard has a tree growing through it,but that's were the joy finishes.
There has been a crude ,modern paint job applied to the internal woodwork, and previous alterations have left an artex wall covering. The furniture is clean but without any wood features you may expect in an early Victorian setting. The wood burner in the tap room isnt connected to anything, the lights were off in the rear snug and the local radio station was playing over the p.a.Worse was the ale choice with Greene King Old Speckled Hen,"Hardy & Hanson" Bitter,CW Youngs Bitter ,Deuchars IPA and Upham Punter which proved the default option and thankfully drinkable. If you like national real ale brands then you will be pleased and clearly the local CAMRA branch like it enough to include in the GBG,but for me this was a single pint stop.
In more imaginitive hands this could be a classic midland pub,it's a crying shame in it's current state.

An interesting and characterful multi room pub in old style, its roots appear to be as a private house. The counter is in a small room to the left of the central corridor with a serving hatch onto the corridor. There are two more sitting rooms, one front right and the other at the back. I sat in the back room as the bar was very busy, the front room less so, it's a room with sofas and modern art . The rear room is quite plain with quarry tiles, green painted tongue and groove, and Britannia tables by brown chairs and benches. The white walls had the well known set of making Guinness by John Ireland as decoration, the only modern touch being a biggish screen. To complete the old style is an outside Gents, beyond a (more recent) drinking marquee.

Lovely old fashioned local on busy road junction, the front bar is really unspoilt, thin beams, wood bar, like stepping into someones house in the 1960s.

Lots of Wolves memrabelia, and indeed on my old route from home to Molineux and gets busy match days. Of course there is also the infamous tree in the gents.

Banks's Bitter plus four guests the beer quality is good.

Quinno _ left this review about Combermere Arms

After a failed attempt in 2010, I finally got to visit the Comberemere which is a lovely traditional building set back from the pavement making it look more like a house than a pub. This extends to the interior which is comprised of three rooms linked by a corridor; the main front bar, a lounge and a telly room. I spent my visit in the main bar which had an attractive tiled bar back (with some old beer bottles perched atop), Wolves memorabilia scattered around. Unsure of how ‘original’ the interior is but it does the job. The floor was carpeted (well-worn!) and I have to say that there was an underlying whiff of the old damp and it was quite cold. Five ales were on (Banks Mild and Bitter, Brew Dog Trashy Blonde (£2.75), Brakspear Oxford Gold and Black Sheep). The Trashy Blonde was spot-on and I ended up staying for three pints more than I expected, aided by the chatty demeanor of the Black Country barmaid. I noted a coffee machine available which I wouldn’t have expected in a place like this. Point of interest is that the gents have a large tree growing in them and out of the roof. From conversation I gather that the pub is owned by Punch.

I really enjoyed my visit and it feels a million miles away from the junction and town centre but there needs to be a bit of TLC in the offing I think. Well-worthwhile (beware that it doesn’t open until around 6 on weekday afternoons).

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Combermere Arms

If anybody gives you some horror story about all Punch Taverns pubs being this, that or the other then you can use this place as there always being an exception to every rule. From a distance, this looks like an interesting old terraced house with a neat front garden, much like its neighbours. However, on closer inspection, you see the flat-mounted pub sign above the front door (but for a first-time visitor you still slightly worry that this might have been left behind after a conversion). Thankfully, as soon as you enter the front door, you immediately get the impression that this is a proper old-fashioned boozer that has thankfully avoided being "done up". The bar is located in the room to the left of the entrance-way and this offers bench seating along the walls and several small tables that can be moved around to accommodate groups of different sizes. There is also a snug on the other side of the entrance and the family room at the back, both served from an open counter beside the corridor. The gents toilets, with its famous tree, is located outside beyond the smoking area to the rear. Five real ales - Banks's Mild and Bitter, Goffs White Knight, Sharps Atlantic IPA and Wharfedale Slingers Gold (£2.80). Fantastic, and long may it remain unaltered.

Ale Monster left this review about Combermere Arms

A very traditional three room terraced pub that’s owned by Punch Taverns, It’s quite easy to miss this place if you’re driving past as it doesn’t look like your typical pub and its set back from the building on the right therefore it blends in with the other terraced houses on the left. The building consists of three small rooms all off a central passage way, when you enter you will find yourself in the corridor with the public bar on your left, this has a small bar counter, a small log burner and loads of Wolves FC photos and memorabilia on the walls. On the right of the passage way (opposite the bar) is a small snug with an old open coal fire and various brewery memorabilia on the walls. Finally at the back of the pub on the right there is another slightly larger lounge with a large flat screen TV on the wall. The bar has a serving hatch in the passage way and there is a beer garden with picnic tables behind the pub.

Regular ales are Banks’s Mild and Bitter with three changing guests from the Punch Taverns nationwide portfolio. The landlord has good taste in real ales in my opinion; I always find an interesting guest beer to suit my pallet (GBG 2010)

This is a great pub that is always worth a visit, it’s got a good authentic traditional look and there are plenty of interesting bits and bobs decorating the walls that add character. When the Wolves are at home the fans queue out the front door to have a pint in here and it’s pretty busy all week long, I think that says it all really. Also I can confirm that the rumours are true! There is a bloody great big tree growing in the corner of the gents urinal and out through the roof! How about that for character.

Soup Dragon left this review about Combermere Arms

Traditional pub with three small rooms. The front room has lots of sporting pictures and other memorabilia. The second room old beer memorabilia on the walls and the third has a large TV. There is patio. A tree grows through the gents floor. This should be the best pub in Chapel Ash, yet often when i visit, and that is every couple of months, i find the clientele friendly, but the service is functional. We go for the beer of course, but the MILD varies to the point that i often have a guest beer instead. Last night, two of the pumps had sold out, leaving Banks's MILD and Hydes Jekyll's Gold, which i thought was OK. You just have to go when in the area.
