Certainly a pub of some character and history and it’s not every day you get the chance to visit the location where the event took place that that allegedly triggered the start of the English Civil war
The present building was originally constructed in 1550 and became an Inn in the late 1700’s and the oak panelled walls, inglenook fireplaces and the grand spiral staircase of this Grade II listed building certainly look aged enough and original and give the pub a lot of character.
Although you can’t blame the pub for the customers it attracts, unfortunately the impressive inglenook fireplace in the downstairs main room was occupied by a group of dick heads who had clearly been in situ for a fair amount of time and seemed to take exception to other people wanting to take a beer near the fireplace, which detracted a bit from the enjoyment of having a beer in these surroundings.
And as the beer choice is as mentioned below, the ale choice from Caledonian and Theakston's will not set the pulse racing but my Deuchars IPA was decent enough.
So I totally agree worth visiting for the pub interior and hope that the atmosphere is better than what we encountered.

The pub is up a narrow alleyway off Silver Street so keep an eye open for the pub sign. The side door opens into a two room layout with an unused bar to the left and the main servery to the right.Lots of wood panelling and a fine inglenook opposite the bar but sadly with just a coal affect gas fire. The interior in CAMRA national inventory listed ,and that was the reason for the visit. The ale line up was Theakston's Old Peculier,Bitter and Lightfoot,Caledonian Edinburgh Castle and Deuchars IPA and Camerons Press Gang (just about OK)but this choice didn't set the pulse racing.
Worth popping in for the one to clock the interior but there was a strange atmosphere inside on my brief visit ,and having ticked it off,I'm not sure I would bother with a return given how many great real ale pubs there are nearby.

Situated down a narrow alleyway in the heart of the Old Town is Ye Olde White Harte, an historic 17th century pub and another one of the City’s famous old inns.

The alleyway opens out into an attractive courtyard with colourful hanging flower baskets which is used for outdoor drinking. Here, a sturdy dark oak door leads into a room with plenty of dark wood panelling, ceiling beams, benches, subdued lighting and leaded stained glass windows. As we pass through this door, we see, immediately in front of us, an impressive wide staircase which leads to an upstairs restaurant – The Plotting Room – where, legend has it, on St Georges Day in 1642, the Governor of Hull and his henchmen resolved to deny King Charles 1ST entry to the City, thus starting off the English Civil War.

The room downstairs is effectively two adjoining areas either side of the main door with a curved bar servery in each. The larger main bar area is on the right and is cosy and comfortable. A prominent feature is a large brick inglenook, large enough to have a seat on either side of the central fireplace contained within. Note the decorative tiling in both this and the other similar inglenook in the smaller bar area.

The smaller bar counter on the left hand side is apparently only brought into use at busier times. Behind this bar, we see an encased skull, which was uncovered during restoration work in 1881.

In summary, it’s a dark atmospheric interior which, despite the seemingly inevitable fruit machine and background music that one comes to regard as almost obligatory in a big pubco outlet, still has much of the feel of a pub of yesteryear about it.

The pub is listed in CAMRA’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

An interesting booklet on sale behind the bar gives us a full account of the pub’s history. As well as the predictable ghostly tales, we learn how, in the 1960’s, the pub became a battleground for feminists because of its refusal to admit women into the pub as customers. We learn what and who was not allowed at that time – this included ( and I quote ) “betting”, “swearing”, “women” and “queers”.

5 real ales were on, all from Caledonian ( Flying Scotsman, Deuchars IPA) and Theakston ( Lighfoot, Old Peculier plus one other ). The Deuchars IPA was in good nick. I resisted the temptation to go for the Old Peculier, even though it was priced at only £ 3.10p. The pub is listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide for 2012.

This is another one you really should try to do if the opportunity arises, despite a disappointing beer range. Note the 11 am opening, when many of the others don’t seem to open before midday at the earliest

Still very busy. They were serving Caledonian Flying Scotsman & Double Czech on our latest visit which is an improvement to the range. Still no micro brewerie though.

Great old pub reached by an alleyway. Has a decent if uninspiring range of real ales that never seem to change. Everytime you visit you notice something that you haven't seen before. The unusual layout means that at busy times seating is at a premium. Well worth a look but don't expect to see a micro brewed beer in here.

Splendid old pub down an alley. Lots of old wood panelling and rambling layout, with a good outdoor courtyard if weather fine. Large range of beers mainly from Caledonian and Theakstons, but with guests. Food good homemade pub stuff, including doorstep sandwiches. If it was in York or London, it would have become a tourist trap - luckily this is Hull.

This pub is up an alleyway in the old town area.
There are lots of different drinking areas and i did'nt really have a proper look around this pub.
There were four handpumps on the bar but there was nothing special on i had a drink of Fullers London Pride this was ok but nothing to shout about the other beers were Caledonian 80/-,Theakston Best and Deuchars IPA.
The pub was getting busy when i left as this was dinnertime.

Hidden up a short alley off Silver Street, a wonderful, listed, old pub with an ancient dark wood panelled interior and huge brick fireplaces. Four pulls with London Pride, Theakstons Old Peculier and Best Bitter, and Deuchars, plus the usual kegs and a very wide range of malt whiskies. No TV, music or suchlike and a pleasant outside area. Friendly chatty natives who are rightly proud of the pub and its long interesting history – the English Civil War could be said to have started here. Service was a bit hit and miss.

Yes but still worth a visit even if you sit in the garden with its water fall you would never believe you were in a City centre.Once ravaged by fire you can still see the aftermath on the stair case.Quirk- it is alleged that in the huge fire place in the main bar the Gunpowder plot was hatched. There is now I believe a restaurant above the pub run by other people.

Fantastic pub great selection of beer and spirits. Amazing decor and very friendly locals only down side it's tiny and if you don't get there early it is impossible to get in on a Friday or Saturday night.
