Steve C left this review about Cape of Good Hope

The Cape of Good Hope has a wooden topped exposed brick bar on the rear wall that serves a mostly wood panelled bar to the left and a bar with high tables that was full of people watching the Rugby World Cup on a big screen to the right. It must have been an antipodean match because my visit was late on a recent Sunday. I decided to sit in the empty left hand side as the sporty bar was very busy. Premium and craft keg was available, and on the hand pumps across both bars were Hook Norton Brewery’s Hooky, Wye Valley’s Butty Bach, Theakston’s Old Peculiar, Church Farm Brewery’s IPA and an offering from Tiny Rebel. The service was polite and the atmosphere was good so I’ll make a point of returning when next in Warwick, although maybe during the day so that I can appreciate the canal side location.

The interior remains much as described below, but I’m guessing standards have declined somewhat since the previous review.  Maybe this is because the bar staff mentioned have been replaced with a gaggle of young females who seem more interested in fashion and celebrity gossip than in serving beer.  Additionally, some of the locals were quite antagonistic towards us, though there were one or two dog lovers who showed interest in our pack.  All that said, the food was good value, and the ales remain on top form.  Butty Bach was the star of the line-up, alongside Frogbit, Church Farm IPA, Purity Wild Goose and Hookey, all tested and found in good order.  There were also two craft beers and Orchard Pig.  I’d be happy to come back and spend the evening enjoying the beer.

As the skipper points out below the bar by the canal is the place to sit and enjoy a decent pint or two or even outside if it's warm enough.
The bar is welcoming and staffed by two knowledgeable and jovial young fellows on our visit serving a variety of local clientele.
Beers on were: Church Farm IPA and Harry's Heifer, Wye Valley Butty Bach, Hook Norton Hooky and Church End Pews Porter. All relatively local and the IPA was just too good to move from despite the Pews Porter also being good.
Away from the town centre but the best ale selection I've seen in Warwick.

A charming canalside pub,but if you approach it from the road, you see a rather dull entrance which opens into the restaurant with a small servery.Go through the open doorway to discover the quarry tiled public bar, with a larger serving area and a door to the narrow terrace where boats are moored. There are some wooden benches here with an opening window through which you can order drinks if drinking outside. The public bar has two large bench seats, with a few high tables by the windows, although one of these obscures the darts throw. There is a BT Sport flatscreen, below which sits a wood burner. The juke box was playing some good sounds at background level and this back bar was traditional.
This GBG regular has 6 handpumps and will regularly stock ales from Church Farm brewery and their IPA sailed through the three pint test. There is normally a lot of Locale here, and as long as you find the back bar,I would say that it would be a mistake to miss this pub when in Warwick although it's quite a long walk from the town centre.

Delightful and popular canal side pub although more than somewhat up itself, however it verges on being a restaurant with beer (very good beer).

1820's pub, adjacent to Cape Top Lock, situated along the Grand Union canal. A two roomed pub with lots of exposed red brick and canal memorabilia. The pub has a good reputation for food and well kept ales. There were 6 ales on handpump on our visit, so I went for The Byatts Glorious, which was excellent. We also tried a locale from Church Farm, which was equally as good. The owner is from NZ, so hence Quinno's Granny Tiggs Orange sauce, which unfortunately was nowhere to be seen on our visit.

Lovely canal-side boozer with fabulous outside seating overlooking lock 25 of the Grand Union. Two rooms inside, the quarry tiled main bar is canal-side and features an outside serving hatch. Shame the fire is gas not real. Also has darts and pool - various sporting trophies sit atop the ceiling beam. Other room is more of a laid-back dining area with bare brick walls. Five ales; Church End Goats Milk (superb nick), Hooky, Wye Valley Butty Bach, GK OSH and Church Farm Harry's Heifer (excellent shape). Decided to sample the food and glad I did, the Haloumi burger was top-notch, as was the Granny Tiggs Orange sauce, an NZ-sourced condiment that was on all the tables (it’s available behind the bar for a fiver - was so impressed I got one for myself!). Busy at lunchtime with quite a collection of workers from IBM who must have an office nearby. Corking place and easily the best in Warwick that day, well-worth the 10-15 minute walk from town.

The owners have been back here since May 2015 and it is back to being a great popular drinking and eating hole. Open & serving food all day every day. 6 real ales on tap, 4 lagers, 2 ciders, moorings outside, BT Sports. They are dog friendly and even sell dog beer! Menus available on www.thecapeofgoodhopepub.com

Steve Shackleton left this review about The Cape of Good Hope

I came here one Thursday afternoon and what a treat I had. I ordered a pint of Abbots from the barman and took my seat. I watched as he put the telly on and inserted a DVD. To my amazement my favourite TV show of all time came on: The Tripods. I hadn't seen this BBC production in years and mentioned this to the barman who I must say was most courteous and said he loved it when it came out and when it was a bit quiet he always put it on. I ordered my second pint of beer and settled down to watch. He said if others came in and it got a bit noisy he would lend me some headphones that worked by remote control so that I could listen without interruption. What service! Thankfully there was only one other punter in that afternoon and he was happy to watch The Tripods too. Imagine the irony when I learnt later that the other character in the pub was a keen photographer with his own website. I made a joke about the fact he was watching the tripods which he found funny. I spent a great three hours there watching The White Mountains. Oh, I almost forgot, the pub was a cracking traditional boozer as others have commented and the beer (all five of them!) was, what shall we say, out of this world. Ten out of ten!

Cape of Good Hope
This idyllic old worlde pub sits nicely on Lock 25 of the Grand Union. Good 48 hour moorings from there to bridge 50a an ideal place to walk into the city centre from.
We crossed via the lock gates, but couldn’t work out how you’d get there from the main road. There were quite a few locals/ regulars enjoying their ales on the seating overlooking the canal. Being served via the open window. Inside is two rooms with a linking bar. Really old and worn looking interior, how proper pubs should look and be. Some great old fashioned bar stools, dart board where we sat. The lounge, had some large and small tables. Some very old but interesting local photos and canal memorabilia.
They had 5 real ales on hand pumps, Slaughter House ‘Swine’, tasty, Green King ‘Abbot’, Tetley’s Bitter, Keystone Hops ‘Weatheroak’, very citrus and would be perfect on a hot summers night, and a very enjoyable Church End ‘Two Locks’. When the swine ran out we then enjoyed Saddleback. Clearly beers well looked after, the bar staff seemed a happy bunch and pleased to serve. Food was a simple pub grub that went down very well.
At the end of our stay we decided to have filled a 4 pint jug (£2) to take away at a reasonable £13 for the Two Locks beer.
They also sell a Fowlers local cheese of earlwood, traditional handmade on the farm by the oldest cheese makers in England 1690. Including extra, extra, extra mature cheddar, strong stuff! Chilli cheddar, garlic and parsley and tasty mature farmhouse.
A great place to rest up after a hard days lock and canalling! Somewhere to go back to!
