This was my first visit to this side street pub. Entrance is by what looks like an old coaching gate. It's fairly dark inside, with just the front windows providing any light. The bar itself was a little further back, with further seating beyond that.

Timothy Taylor Landlord is the regular ale. I opted for the guest beer, which was Rudgate Odin's Gold. There was also a selection of 4 ciders from Lilley's - Mango, Peach, Tropical & Darkcider. Craft beers were Hopical Storm & Neck Oil.

An 80's soundtrack was playing with one other customer in the main bar area who left soon after I arrived and a group of loud girls somewhere to the rear. They could be heard, but not seen.

I wasn't expecting much from this place, but with a guest beer and a few ciders, I was pleasantly surprised.

Not a bad little pub, if a bit dated and unfortunately with overly loud music. The initial impression is not great, being pointed in through a fire door rather than the proper entrance but once inside it is ok. A good selection of pump clips is on display over the bar but on this occasion there were just TT Knowle Spring and Golden Best on the pumps, admittedly in good nick. Fair enough but some room for improvement.

Taylors beers still prominent on the bar, they provided 3 of the 4 real ales, the Boltmaker was in pretty average condition though and the pub is mediocre. Boring generic decor and table service in operation due to the cramped interior. in other towns it would be alright but I couldn’t wait to get to York’s many more interesting pubs.

Seems to be a Taylors pub, entrance down covered alley. Beer could be better quality. Raised bar area, nice enough building

The Blue Boar was called the Little John when i first went in it,so it was a bad mistake of mine to go in this pub on my crawl.

You have to go up an alley to get to the entrance.
Once inside there is a oblong shaped room which is split into two levels, the serving bar is on the upper level, the room is bare boarded, the seating normal tables and chairs.
There was a decent choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Leeds Pale which went down very well, the other beers were Taylor Landlord,Hook Norton Lion,Moorhouses Pride of Pendle and Hobgoblin.
Decent background music was playing, the pub was fairly busy on my Saturday dinner visit.
I thought this was a decent enough place to have a couple of drinks.

I picked up a leaflet in the Three Tuns which advertises both itself and this pub, so they may be sister pubs. This one does not appear to be a Marstons house though, and had Timothy Taylor beers on plus various guests. The Landlord was fine. Like the other pub they had the third pint offer for 3 different beers, and quotes around the walls. Also had a good food menu.

Old Boots left this review about Little John Inn

Formerly the Little John the old name was restored in 2013, the Blue Boar is a split level pub with the entrance via the side alley. The front sitting room overlooks Castlegate is carpeted and is traditionally furnished with tables and chairs. At a slightly higher level in the middle of the pub is the serving area with a short counter, floorboards and tall tables and chairs characterise this part of the pub. At the rear a flight of stairs leads down to a vaulted cellar which I didn't explore, not due to stories of Dick Turpin's ghost haunting it but just no time. Five handpulls dispense two Timothy Taylors (Golden Best and Landlord); two Theakstons (OP and Best) and an Ossett, there's also a couple of lagers and Guinness. Service was fine from youngish staff in branded polo shirts, the customers also 30somethings with a few younger and older. Plain white walls with little in the way of decoration, there is a quiz machine and a bandit as well as constant piped music. Food from a usual pub style menu is served as this is the heart of tourist York but prices were average. The Dick Turpin connection is that the Essex thug's body was brought here and put on display after his execution, at a penny a head.
