Small pub with strange dark décor and regular entertainment, specialising in craft-type beers. Seemed to have several Revolutions Beers on handpump and some Brass Castle on keg at time of visit. Possibly ok if you are going for a gig but it didn't do a lot for me apart from the beer.

Reopened under new management on 8th December 2016, the couple now running it were previously at the well regarded Craven Arms in Birmingham (before its recent troubles).

A lovely little pub between a string of pubs in the area, probably the best of the bunch. After a short stint as being a Timothy Taylors tied house the Woolpack is now a genuine free house. Their beers are sourced from mainly local Yorkshire brewery's and they usually feature a Timothy taylors beer, more oftern than not its Boltmaker allong with 7 other hand pumps. On my visit they were getting rid of their beers to make way for new ones in time for the Tour de Yorkshire and were selling off their current lines at £2 per pint, usually i would say their beers are around the £3.20/30 Mark. i had a pint of great hecks dave and this was a very nice drink.
Inside the pub is quite small with a few booths and separate chairs and tables with one tv screen and a bar billairds table. A very nice place to sit and have a quiet drink, i was very happy having a drink here and would gladly return, the landlord was very friendly and welcoming and more than happy to chat about his beers and talk you through what to have.

Another expansive desription from PSM saves me having to do one. Fiendly bar staff and a great range of ale in this fairly simply furnished and decorated pub. My pint was in excellent condition and I'll definitely call in again when in this part of York.

Another fine ale house situated just outside the city walls, the Woolpack is a fairly basic single bar boozer. The carpeted room sees the servery running down the right hand side, with a dark wood and red tile counter and lovely stained glass canopy bearing the pub’s name, giving the space a bit of character. Curved banquette seating is available under the front windows, in a space decorated with artwork based on book covers and some Timothy Taylor posters. More banquette seating is available along the left hand wall, in the area opposite the bar, supplemented with a good number of low stools. A bar billiards table stands at the rear of the room, under which a couple of friendly lurchers (not whippets) were resting. The room has been decorated with a few framed gig tickets, some album covers and various posters promoting live sport, with a TV screen turned on during our visit and broadcasting a tennis match. A beer glass collection runs along a high shelf and there are a fair few pump clips on display as well. Music played quietly in the background throughout our stay and I also noticed various board games and beer guides with which to while away the hours.
A good Yorkshire based ale range comprised Taylors Landlord, Revolutions House of Fun Milk Stout, Great Newsome Hops in the Spring, Acorn Blonde and Roosters Yankee. The Milk Stout was very enjoyable and the bar staff were polite and patient, dealing with much dithering at the bar and then balancing precariously on a table in order to capture the perfect group photo for us pub crawlers.
I really liked the simple, unpretentious look and feel to this place and could quite easily imagine spending a good few hours in here working along the pumps. The basic presentation might not be to everyone’s taste but I felt very comfortable in here and hope to return some time soon.

Cannot really add anything to the comments gone before except to concur that I also found this one a nice single room pub with a good range of beer and accommodating bar keep.
Decent enough range of five ales and two ciders and I went for the Revolution House of Fun, a chocolate Milk Stout, which was in good condition.
As others have mentioned a dog friendly pub with a couple of large ones in situ kipping under the bar billiards table, or at least they were until we all bowled in..

The Woolpack Inn is a single room pub with a bar that supports six hand pumps and some premium lager fonts. There is a plasma screen on the wall for showing live sports and underneath is a bar billiards table. Sleeping under this table were a couple of lurchers. I must admit that I was disappointed when I found out that they weren’t whippets. There was some background music playing, but this was drowned out by the large group of PuG crawlers that I entered with. The barman reminded me of Frank Gallagher, but he was a very friendly bloke who took some pictures of our group.

This is a dog friendly pub that is open from 17:30 until 23:30 Monday to Wednesday, 17:30 to midnight on Thursdays, 16:00 until midnight on Fridays, 12:30 until midnight on Saturdays and 14:00 until 23:00 on Sundays. Only over 18’s are permitted at all times. Various events are held throughout the week, including: open mic on Mondays; speed quizzing on Tuesdays; free bar billiards on Wednesdays; Blues on Thursdays.

I enjoyed my visit and would pop back in again of passing.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Woolpack Inn

Quite a plain-looking building, but the simple single-room interior has an appealing look and feel. Welcoming barman too. Regular live music advertised. Six handpumps, with a fine choice of five real ales - including Great Newsome Hops in the Spring (£1.60, half) - and a cider.

This pub is as described by previous reviewers, although the best feature for me was the name of the pub set in leaded lights above the bar counter. The barman was particularly accommodating in going to considerable effort to get a decent team photograph of the Pubs Galore group.

This is yet another excellent York pub. There were great beers available, and it had a very traditional pub feel about. Another winner on the York crawl.

Decent, slightly dated local pub that is a bit scruffy. Interesting points of note were the pubs name in stained glass on the bar gantry, bar billiards table (with lurchers in situ underneath) and a selection of games. The availability of old Private Eyes and Viz mags always gets a point from me. Five ales and two ciders - my Acorn blonde was OK in condition but tasted a bit muted compared to normal. Bloke behind the bar looked like Robert Plant’s lovechild and a good egg he was too.
