Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Towan Blystra (JD Wetherspoon)

It's been 6½ since my last visit to Newquay and I thought I'd make a repeat stop at this Wetherspoon's on the way back to my hotel late on Tuesday evening, mainly because I was still on the hunt for a meal.

Food is served until 11pm. So I was in luck.

Unlike the Red Lion where I had just come from, the Towan Blystra was relatively calm. Although it did get a little more boisterous after 11pm when other pubs had presumably thrown people out and they had retreated here.

It's a fairly typical 'spoon's. This visit had none of the cleanliness issues of my last one when we'd occupied a table that looked like a bunch of crows had feasted upon.

My dinner arrived quickly and accompanied my pint of Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon nicely. Real ales were the usual Sharp's Doom Bar & Greene King Abbot alongside Greene King IPA, Bays Topsail, Peerless Full Whack, Tintagel Caliburn & Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven.

I rounded my evening off nicely with a half of the Caliburn whilst watching some of the Newquay youth arrive.

remains utter dross with half of the 8 handpumps given up to the Doom Bar-Ruddles-Abbott triangle of hell and two more to ciders. the place is one uninspiring square room with 'areas' separated by beams. still it's pub heaven compared with everything else in Newquay. outdoor drinking available with glorious seaside views of the tatty Berties nightclub and a noisy main road.

This is another Cornish JDW that appears to have disputed disabled access. According to What Pub access is via an alley off Springfield Road behind the pub.
The front stairs are not on the same scale as their Bodmin outlet. Inside it's a wide rectangular room with the bar at the rear. It seemed quite bright inside compared to some of their outlets. It was fairly quiet on my November Thursday afternoon visit. There are just eight hand pumps which had one available soon, two unused, the two GK beers, Tintagel Merlin's Muddle & Pendragon and Atlas Nimbus. I went for a Cornish cider (£2.75) rather than the beers.
I thought this place was OK but let down by a fairly average beer choice.

This Wetherspoons has a few steps to get into it, and a notice saying disabled to ring for assistance. I was told that it has been converted from what used to be Brunels pub. It was busy as you would expect a town centre Wetherspoon outlet, but the beer range was very disappointing with only Greene King Abbot and Ruddles, and Caledonian Deuchers IPA plus one guest, Skinners Ginger Tosser so we didn’t stay.

A Wetherspoon pub. All the usual stuff, coffee, food, ale etc. Has steps leading up to the entrance. There is a bell for disable access, although I couldn't see a wheelchair lift. Gets very busy Saturday mornings for breakfast, with chairs disappearing from tables and clogging up another area. Still, I like it.
