Modern style Gastro Bar, offering a good range of beer,it was by far the most expensive place visited on my day out in york, my Thornbridge Kipling weighed in at the slightly strange price of £3.84 a pint ,the Jaipur £3.94 nearly London prices, this didn't affect the custom though and was quite busy. The beer was good and the place OK,I would return.

Love this pub and a couple of visits while in York this week didn't disappoint. Beers change frequently so we enjoyed beers from York and Mallinsons breweries first visit, and Lancaster and Raw breweries today.

The above was in March 13 and we called again yesterday to find it as good as ever. Good beer, good food and good atmosphere. For those who like foreign beers a good selection in bottles and some keg on the bar too.

A fairly cavernous shop conversion on Micklegate not far from the City Walls and the railway station, formerly the home of the inventor of the Hansom cab.
We met our son for lunch on a wintry Wednesday in early February, sitting in the front window watching the weather change from cloud to sleet to snow to sun and back to snow. This is a beer oriented space, both cask and keg:the girls behind the bar being keen to advise the drinker.
There were nine handpumps in operation on our visit, with beer from Yorkshire and further afield: I was very impressed with West Coast Stout from Squirrel Brewery, and with Leeds Brewery’s Yorkshire Gold. Much pub and beer related memorabilia was displayed about the pub, including material from Shepherd Neame:surely a bit far from home?
Food, naturally, is an important part of this pub’s trade, and pride seems to be taken in their pies:unfortunately on our visit the pie of the day was Haggis based; a step too far. However, I enjoyed my ham ‘n’ eggs. Our fellow customers included a few beer lovers and a group of land agents discussing important matters.
Not perhaps as cosy as the “typical “ York pub, I’d happily return on future visits.

We've called in several times since my last update including twice earlier this week. Good quality food and great quality beer. Friendly and knowledgeable staff also make for a great pub experience. Top class.

Another weekend in York and another 2 visits to this excellent pub. Three of the beers changed between the first and second visits and every pint I had (and I had quite a few) over the two visits were excellent. Whilst it may not be a traditional looking pub, it's difficult to fault it in any way.

Called in here twice over a couple of nights in York last week. We ate here on the second night. There was a pie special, it was Haggis Pie, I had to have it. It was very like a shepherds pie, but made with haggis rather than beef/lamb, absolutely brilliant. Washed down with a couple of pints of their always excellent ale, it's hard to beat is this place.

One of the Market Town Tavern small chain of pubs (10 I think). Converted from a shop so fairly rectangular in shape. Always has a great range of ever changing beers on tap, often involving Roosters, York and Leeds. Serves really great pub grub, it's a little more expensive than you'd expect, but when it arrives it's well worth it. Has been no smoking since it opened so everything is still looks very fresh, even though it's been open a few years now. Great place. This is the other halfs favourite pub in York and it's in my top 5 as well. That's why we're always in here whenever we're in York which is regularly.

Brigantes is located at the Southern end of Micklegate, not too far from the train station and just round the corner from the York Brewery. Despite being a fairly recent shop conversion, the pub has quite a lot of character and reminded me a bit of a continental style brasserie. You enter into a wooden floored bar area with an L shaped servery. The large windows along the front wall help to give this space quite a light, open feel to it and there are a few tables dotted around plus plenty of standing room. Beyond the bar there is a darker and cosier lower level which is carpeted and has a few booths with a mix of standard and pew seating. Some of the partitioning screens have etched glass in them bearing the pub’s logo whilst the walls are adorned with various bits of brewerania including a surprising amount from Kent’s Shepherd Neame Brewery. An enormous collection of pump clips is on display, reflecting the eclectic beer selection available in the pub over the years. Stairs lead up to the first floor dining room which is filled with formal tables and chairs.
The beer range is detailed on blackboards behind the bar, along with the food specials. The choice on my visit was Acorn God Save the Queen, York Guzzler and Legacy, Copthorne Trafalgar, Timothy Taylor Golden Best and Ram Tam, Great Heck Jango’s Ashes, Leeds Pale and Salamander Her Majesty’s Pleasure. I tried the Legacy which was a tasty pint served in excellent condition. The pub was fairly quiet when we arrived but soon started filling out and a nice atmosphere was soon generated in stark contrast to some of the bars we passed further up Micklegate.
We only intended to have a brief rain break in here but we found the place very comfortable and welcoming and ended up passing a few hours instead. This is an interesting counterpoint to some of York’s more traditional pubs and is one that should be included on any crawl around town.

Good size pub, with 8 ales. Called in looking for Durham Brewery on tap, just sold out. Enjoyed the Leeds Brewery IPA, Kelkham Island Easy Rider and Bunces Brewery Golden. Will return.

Like the 2 comments below, I too rate this pub and the Maltings as my 2 must visit pubs in York. Agree about the good food. On occasions I have asked if I can just have a soup when something delicious appears on the board and there's never a problem. Serve foreign beers on draught including Kwak and Duvel. Timmermans also features with Cherry or Strawberry seeming popular. We chose Hambleton Stud and Fyfe Lion Slayer. Found it a little daunting that 3 York beers were on here when they have their own outlets as it reduces the choice a bit.
March 2011 update.
Called in today and found a superb range of ales on. Timothy Taylor Best Bitter one of the ales on which makes a change from Landlord, but we chose York First Light and Wharfebank "C" (100th brew). Its such a comfortable pub to be in, and staff will chat too. Food coming out looked good.

Brigantes is in an area of York where there used to be lots of decent pubs that have all been ruined over the years but this newish pub is a really decent pub to visit.
There was one room which i found very comfy and a relaxing place to have a drink on a Sunday afternoon, there were nine real ales on the bar and i had a drink of Leeds best and this was very nice i also had a drink of Taylor Golden best and this was also very nice i did'nt write the rest down as there were to many.
I found this pub to be friendly and i would have happily stayed in here all day.

A favourite of ours when in York. a bit further from the railway station but tends to be a more relaxed atmosphere than the other favourite, the Maltings. Had a great pint of York Brewery Centurians Ghost. also had 2 Naylors ales on amongst the other ales on. the barmaids missed us and served someone who had just walked up to the bar. she came over and apologized to us. Now that's a first!
