The Last time i passed this pub it was closed and i thought gone forever so it was great to see it up and running again.
I have always liked this pub i first went in here in 1982. On this recent visit the pub has had a general makeover i went in the room at the front and this was quite a nice comfortable room to have a drink in.
There were four real ales on the bar i had a drink of Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and this was a very nice drink i also noticed Taylor Landlord on the bar but i car'nt remember the other two beers.
I still like this pub and will definatly visit again.

A very thorough review below by Mr Dragon. On our visit the Pheonix was reasonably busy with many enjoying the spring sunshine in the garden outside.
The welcome was friendly and the small front room is a comfortable place for a pint or two.
The four handpumps featured TT Landlord, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Wold Top Bitter and one other which I forgot to note. The Landlord was excellent.
A great place to take a break if walking the city walls and well worth a visit if not. I'll certainly return when in the area.

A small cottagey style pub looking like it had recently received a make-over in a light render with green paintwork. There is a patio.

The interior has two rooms both served by a central bar. The front room is in red and green wood panel, with a wood floor and there is a fireplace. There were no real pictures giving it a slightly bare look, but there were candles! The back room was in green and a French mustardy colour, with jazz music posters for interest and had a dart board. The place was quiet as it had just opened, so there was no clientele, no TV and no music – which made it fine by me. The service was friendly as well.

Beer; Tap stuff, with Wold Top Brewery’s Wold Top Bitter, Wharf Bank Brewery’s Tether, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and a decent Timothy Taylor Landlord

Looking tidy on the outside, it turned out to be a place that was more than worthy of a visit. The beer was decent and the place, I believe, has live jazz music. I hope more people will drop by – they should do and I will next time I am in York.

Re-opened as a good real ale pub. Nice interior with a small terrace area outside at the back. Beer on tap includes Tim Taylor Landlord and Copper Dragon with other guest ales, not a massive selection but very good and well worth a visit. Considering the previous incarnation of the Phoenix it's truly amazing what has been done to turn this pub around. It offers a friendly atmosphere and well decorated interior making it a very comfortable place for a good beer.
