A York success story, a dilapidated pub re-opened, reinvigorated and given an ale focus. Interior retains its original layout over two rooms via a side corridor replete with serving hatch. The main bar is at the front as you enter, with olive green painted panelling and maroon walls - a bit spartan for my taste. The rear room is a traditional, unmolested tap room and much more characterful. Look out for the pictures of jazz legends. Beyond is a tidy rear courtyard with a great view of the city wall it backs on to. Items of note included a selection of daily papers, piano, real fire, darts and bar billiards (though its positioning with one side up against the wall inhibits play). No TV or fruits. The Victorian soft porn in the gents I always find rather tacky, personally. Five ales on and a very good selection that took me a few seconds to choose from - my choice of Copper Dragon Golden Pippin was in very good nick. Also partook a lovely large pork pie, a steal at £1.95. Friendly landlord too. Well-worth making the effort to seek out.

Just inside one of the gates to the city walls, this pub retains the two room format with the old public bar being the ront room where the servery is located. Green painted wood panelled walls, bare boarded flooring, red bench seats and a red painted wall to one end. Candles in glass vases on the tables and a tall vase of flowers on the end of the bar. There is a small serving hatch to the side corridor, the area then winds around behind a fireplace complete with coal fire to a rear room with green benches and stools. There is plenty going on in here, a bar billiards table, red pool table and a dartboard, a piano against a wall and framed pictures of jazz musicians the main items of decoration.
Another York pub with a good beer menu, Half Moon Stellar Oatois, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Wold Top Bitter and Half Moon Dark Masquerade. Not sure if they do full meals but the proper pork pies were a snip at £1.95.

A traditional pub immediately adjacent to a stretch of the city wall, it consists of a front and rear bar as well as a smallish courtyard garden which offers great views of the wall.

The front bar is perhaps the smaller of the two and this has a sanded wood floor, etched glass windows, green wood panelling on the walls and a dark red feature wall at one end. A coal fire was smouldering away and a large vase of lilies on the bar was appreciated by Mrs B. The rear bar included a bar billiards game, darts board and a piano. I suspect they don’t do much in the way of food, although a chalk board advertised pork pies at £1.95 and these were appreciated by some of our party.

Beers on a recent visit were Timothy Taylor Landlord, Half Moon Dark Masquerade, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, World Top Bitter and Stella Oatis.

An old style 2 roomed interior serving 5 real ales. Live jazz advertised. The pub has bar billiards table and a dartboard.

Hard against the ancient walls by Fishergate Bar in a less touristy part of the city. There's a small taproom at the front with seemingly basic and traditional decor, stay a while and you'll notice little modernistic touches here and there. Behind is a larger lounge but also in traditional style. Between the two in a corridor is a serving hatch in the style of the Blue Bell or the Minster. The front windows are etched with Magnet Ales, so it's a sometime John Smiths house, no longer thank goodness as there's a good range of well kept micro brewery beers on offer. The peanuts and cashews are sold in small pots and there is some tasteful Victorian soft porn in the Gents. Check the opening hours on weekdays.

Our first visit to this 2013 Good Beer Guide pub, and enjoyed Hadrian Border Secret Kingdom. Friendly local pub that opens 6pm during the week despite its closeness to the city walls and some of York's tourist attractions.

Excellent pub, with excellent beer. Jazz once or twice a week. Pleasant friendly staff. This pub has been very tastefully refurbished, with the original bar, fire places (in the winter a real fire, not gas), windows, etc., etc., still in place. Thankfully there's no fruit machines, jukebox or TV. There is a little garden/yard which is over looked by the walls. I recommend a visit to this pub, its not that far off the beaten track, in fact that's an advantage.
Winners of, "The Jazz Yorkshire Venue of the Year" 2010 and "York CAMRA Town Pub of the Season" 2010 also listed in CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2012.

Came across this great little pub whilst walking the city walls. I just wish there were more pubs like this, great ale and a really lovely interior.
I liked the way the owners have preserved the "old style" where others might just have ripped everything out and replaced with new. Live music is just another reason to go.
A gem of a pub, wish it was my local but will drop in again. keep up the great work.

Nicely done out pub, saved a year or two ago after a period of closure. We almost always end up calling here for a pint when in York as it's just across the road from Totos, one of our favourite York restaurants. Small front room, with candle powered tables in the evenings. A much larger back room with a couple of quirky little seating areas and a decent sized patio at the rear. Three beers available when we called in with another turned round. The guest was Wold Top Anglers Retreat which was well kept. It's a quirky place that has been well refurbished in a sympathetic way without damaging the character of the place. Well done guys, we'll be back yet again soon.
